Wait for the backlash :(

After the two fatal accidents involving 4wds this weekend, I expect quite a backlash from people like our friends at Anti SUV.org & the LTSA.

Although none of them were on club trips or actual offroading for that matter, people will still throw their toys!!

4wds are not dangerous, its the drivers that are!!
My thoughts anyway

Thats one of them - front page the herald...... They say alot about 4wds and driving on the beaches but dont mention the reason for the fatalities/injuries because they werent wearing seatbelts - hence they were thrown from the vehicle

. Commiserations to the families though

Must of been a violent roll for them to be thrown that far away from the vehicle! 8O

Not knowing that beach at all, I guess there are places with soft sand that can trip you up at slower speeds.
For those that know the beach, do you think speed was the major factor here??

Yea I would say so. Cruiser Beast and I go and drive Muriwai every now and then and it is a fairly safe beach. You don't tend to come across to much stuff that could get in your way or make you roll, except for soft sand and of course if you hit this to fast and you are not holding on to the steering wheel properly then we all know it can move you around a bit.

So yea I think they proberbly rolled from having to much speed and not knowing what they were doing. And of course if they had been wearing there seatbelts they could very likely still be alive today.

If those are the roof racks in the forground then they must have been fear honking along, thats a huge distance to move from the initail roll over!! I'm surprised theres any survivers at all!! 8O
I can see something the likes of Oriti beach (Southland) happening here, they'll just slap a 50km limit on the beach, and all it will effect is the people who are driving senseably anyway

As for anti 4WD crowd, I think that will depend on the crash teams findings and judging by the signs of excess speed and the fact that they got thrown (no seat belts) I don't think they will get much mileage from this

Its a pretty sad state of affairs when we have to considder something like this, when its brought about by someones death

I was wrong, I've just heard on the radio they (powers that be) are calling for a special licence for 4WD's hmmm don't know if this is such a bad idea

a licence for 4wds sounds like a way for the govt to get more money out of us but i must agree that it would stop alot of people that dont need or intend to use there 4wds off road getting one and it would make those who use one more safe as they know or should know how to handle it as i have still got alot to learn about off highway driving it would be a good thing for beginers. I hope to do a couse in late november :wink:

If they are going to go for a special license for 4wds then lets see what else we can catergorise.
On a Car license you are able to drive a light truck which handles even worse than most 4 wheelers, you can go and get a lowered rice rocket which is dangerous, I have cut more than one teenager out of these things.
What will qualify as a 4wd
Subarus
Volvo crosscountry etc
Mitsi Chariot??? :wink:

Now come on....lets all have a think about it.

Driver training is what is needed not kneejerk reactions from Legislation pushing salad eaters, and I'll bet that the Volvo and Porsche Cayenne drivers will protest right back. :evil:

Advanced driver training is important
We can throw a 14 ton drum braked leaf sprung Fire pump arround the streets daily and not roll them, and before anyone points to the recent incident up north, there are some outstanding issues surrounding that one!!

Ive been on a few of the car forums (mitsi/honda etc) after this and its funny listening to them bag us. All these big 4wds that block our view and belch out black smoke, owners who dont know how to handle them etc. But then there are some reasonable people on there that also say that owners of high performance cars should get special liscences to drive them as they are usually under 25 year olds in 200 + kw cars, which is a recipe for disaster.
I cant see it happening, as you may as well say Van drivers should have them (apart from the goods carrying lisence) because there centre of gravity is just as high. The list goes on........

This whole 4wd licence thing is a goverment revenue gathering exercise. We've all been through the whole licence thing. We all know how it works.... We study hard to do the writen test, we are nervous when it comes to the practial, we behave ourselves infront of the testing officer and them with shiny new licence in hand we do as we please.
When is this going to stop? As the days go on we are forced more and more into a policed state. Isn't it about time that we as the people - the ones who put these wankers in power - stand up and let them know what is acceptable? We give them an inch and they take a mile.
