Grand vitara recovery points

Hi

I'm wanting to sort some recover points for my 98 grand vitara here are my thoughts

Rear - remove tow bar and put on a shackle through the hole
Front - Weld on a 2nd loop to match the factory loop on the LH this is a 16mm steel rod welded top/bottom both sides.

2 concerns about the above is welding the chassis, is it high tensile? and do some clubs require rated recovery hooks?
Looks awkward to bolt anything to the front of the chassis and I think the 2x 16mm loops with an equaliser strap will be stronger

Any help is appreciated

Cheers
Matt

Plenty of info on here around recovery points. Hooks are designed to fail safely rather than shear off.

If you are planning to join a club you should talk to them about what their requirements are.

Matt.

be aware of where your airbag sensor is as well, in the 5drs it is just behind the front bumper, mine had a reinforced hoop with a plate going back to the chassis

I grinded off the recovery hoop on the front of my GV can't remember why now but I think it might have interferred with the hook I installed.
I drilled right through the chassis just above the remnants of the hoop and put three bolts (two of which go through the hook) through the chassis with plates either side. I had intended on eventually putting tubes in between the plates but never have. Mine has been on for about 7 years and I have been recovered from it a lot.
The front hook is horizontal.
I have a custom rear towbar but its a pretty similar design to the factory ones etc. and it has horizontal hooks either side mounted off the vertical plates.
Let me know if you want any pics

Thanks Nstacey
If you could post some pics that would be much appreciated
How did you get on drilling did it take forever and did you have to use cutting oil?

Cheers
Matt

I think I just used a decent corded power drill and bit and it went ok
