Hi there.
After running my spouse's KZJ71 M/T 1kz-te 3000cc engine for a couple of minutes, being it in the morning or any other time of the day (as long as it asent been runed any time before of the day), the engine shuts down by itself. All panel light and front lights won't be affected. First the check engine light comes slowly on, till it's fully on, then the engine shuts down. It will start on easily immediately afterwards with a turn of the key. Then it will die again. This will go on for several times, until the engine gets hot. Until then, the check engine light will gradually light up less intensively, and eventually will stop coming on, and the engine will stop shutting down. Also, wille driving, before it stops shutting down, the check engine light will be less or more bright according to higher or lower revs respectively. Even on idle it will die before getting hot.
Check engine diagnosis says there are no stored error codes!
What a mystery. What could it be? Can someone please help me?
Many thanks.
Cheers,
PS: I've read http://www.offroadexpress.co.nz/Forums/ ... 9&start=15 and http://www.offroadexpress.co.nz/Forums/ ... 22&t=26321 it does not look like any of those problems!

Sounds like ecu capacitors are failing..? someone else may chime in but I'd suggest trying another ecu if you can grab one..

Hi
Can you tell me if it ok all the time when hot?
My first thought is ECU. What year is the truck?

The ECU will have died, its an easy fix pull it out (above the glove box) and send it the anything electrical in nelson, could be the stop valve on the diesel pump as well, most likely the ecu. a place in ak fixes them as well (on TM( do a search on here heaps of threads. my one was running then cutting out the same as yours

Hi Henry. It's a 1995 truck.
After hot it won't have problems anymore during the day. Even if I leave the car with the engine off for a couple of hours!

There is that possibility. However, I can't send it to have it fixed cause I'm in Mozambique

I'm trying to find one from a broken truck that I can buy. In the meanwhile I'm trying to look at other things.
Thanks Jerry.

be aware the 94 Onwards had the later ecu which limits revs in 1st low, are there any good electronics places over there that can fix the leaking capacitors on the ecu board?

Not really sure. I'll disassemble the ECU and take some pictures. Maybe someone here will be able to guide me

Thanks for the info Jerry. I had noticed that the part number was different from the previous to 2004 (89661-60230/89661-60231). But I had no idea what was the diference.

Hi
I know this was a couple of years ago now but did you ever get to the bottom of this problem? I'm having the exact same issue. I'm going to take a look at the ECU to see if there's obvious capacitor damage but it would be nice to know where else to start looking.
Many thanks

It will be the ECU, there's a place in Nelson that repairs them. Someone will remember the name, I cant find it.
Either way, those symptoms are exactly those of a dying ECU, and you can get the ecu repaired and returned back to you for a few hundred dollars with in a week.

Thanks Dieselboy. Anything electronic in Nelson is the place. I've found a leaky capacitor in the ECU so it looks like I'll be sending it up there.
Re: 1kz-te shutting down by itself! (engine failure?) Help....
I took the cover off the ECU and there was a very slight amount of corrosion around one of the capacitors.I sent it to anything electronic in Nelson and they fixed it and sent it back for $220 including freight.Problem solved. They said they do about 10 1kz ECU's per week
