Petrol starting problem

Post by NJV6 »

Got a starting issue with my Pajero, I had the starter off replacing the drive in it as it was not always turning the engine over. Now when I go to start it, it sounds pretty average and is slow to turn over. The starter has since then been checked out a number of times to see if it is at fault and it appears not. The twin batteries are fine.

At the same time I repaired the fuel pump as it had been rearranged in the fuel tank by rocks during 4WDing and was not holding pressure. I operated the key in the start position without the starter hooked up to check fuel pump and am wondering if that could have damaged something?

The vehicle runs fine once started but I don't trust it for being a reliable starter at the moment. I can hear a relay clicking away somewhere in the passenger footwell/ECU area when it is not starting very well.

Ideas?

You might have two issues Glen.

If its slow to turn over then it has to be starter related, nothing in the fuel system will affect how it cranks. How has the starter been checked?

The fuel pressure is held so the injector rails have fuel allowing the motor to start quickly. If there isn't any pressure then it will take longer to start and crank for longer. Usually there is a check valve in the pump to prevent bleed back into the tank and keep pressure up however the truck will crank at normal speed without this.

Good luck.

Matt.

Mine was doing the same, slow and clicking. It was corroded contacts on the starter solenoid. New solenoid (can not get replacement contacts), clean armature, seal drain hole and still going strong.
