front driveshaft removal

Post by noexitroad »

while under me ole stage 1 the other day i noticed the middle universal cross on the front driveshaft (it's a double cardon) is knackered and will need replacing asap. a quick phone call to lrspares and some replacement universal joints are on order but a few weeks away. so do I
1) completely ignore it and keep trucking?
2) remove front driveshaft and keep trucking?
3) i can't think of another option?

is it full time 4x4? if so you may need to lock the center dif or you won't go anywhere with out a front driveshaft.

If you keep driving, it could end up inside by the clutch pedal and you wont like it.
If you run it off road on the rear diff alone expect trouble.
Thats why they were constant 4wd in the first place.

3) fit a standard drive shaft from a early V8 110 or maybe a front one from a 70's RR. Won't be double cardan but should suffice meantime.

Measure the closed and open length of your existing one to determine if other options will fit.

You can use option 2 but only on the road with centre diff locked.

1) is not an advisable option and should be dismissed.

Even off road would be fine. I don't think his Spicerbury 60 rear end would give a dogs balls, it barely notices the 134bhp made by the standard carb V8, let alone the 91hp made by the Stage One in factory form.

Unless I'm missing something about transmission windup or something
