I wonder if that is just for the ROW market GQ Patrol, or if it also applies to the JDM Y60 Safari, ie the ones that actually end up in this country.

All JDM Y60's onwards were badged safari, none were turbo ...if it's a factory turbo'd black top it will be post 93 production engine and it will be aussie assembled.
one piece of advise..don't raise the power too much over factory for reliability's sake.

Say what??? JDM is Japan spec Nissan, GQ/Y60 came out as turbo option from 93 as you state but were Japan ex factory. Aussie did not have factory turboed td42's.

That is across the board and relevant to the TD42 whether it be the Australian Patrol or Japanese Safari, given the amount of information involved there is still some confusion as to change dates between black top n/a engines and black top turbo engines. Old Mav pretty much sets the record straight on his post on the last page.

JDM is japanese domestic market. very different from a japanese spec nissan...if there is such a term if you mean the following...
A japanese spec nissan would have been what the new owner ordered as optional extra's. Not what nissan sold inside japan as they assembled them.

mines a 93 blacktop td42t safari built in japan was inported around 2000 i think its great if it does the job for you why worry!.
The old mans got a n/a silvertop and mines got a lot more get up go and nicer to drive in saying that it is a turbo but running factory boost a turbo

so out of the td42 silver top, non turbo black top, and black top factory turbo which is "claimed" to be the "better" or "stronger" engine.? (obviously taking into account that the factory turbo one has more power, but that aside)
cheers
