Dunno but about 20 years ago I had a late 2A (with the lights in the guards) and swapped the gearbox with a 1950's or early 1960's seires 2 landy. It was a straight bolt in job, I don't recall any problems with it?

Could be talking sh!te here (I know nothing of landys)
But I heard that series 1and2 had no syncros where as series 3 did. don't know whether that helps you or not.

series 3 has syncro on all gears. 2a boxes are apparently the strongest, and only have syncro on 3rd and 4th???

Yes the 3 had syncro on 2nd up the 2 has syncro on 3rd&4th only but with 2a and the2a suffix b is their any markings or tell tail sign on the outside of the box? I am finnishing puting the 2a box in today i did find their was a difference in the bell housings the 3 has a diff clutch setup so we had to swap the bells over but im still not sure if it is a 2a or a 2a suffix b

best place for a answer to this question is probably the yahoo nzlroc group
they can tell you anything about absolutely any landrover ever built right down to the size bullets you should be using on your wiring loom in your series 1
if you ask me some of them are a little bit obssessed
