Hi all,

I'm busy crunching a few number on a 2.7 petrol surf versus a 3L diesel version, so I'm after some real life figures from someone who owns one and users it offroad etc. looking at manual surfs not autos.. I will only be doing around 15k a year max with this wagon so doing all the number re rego, Kms, servicing etc, cooling issues etc..

I have a mate who owns a diesel surf and gets 600kms to 60L of diesel on e open road and around 500 around town.so what does your petrol surf get ?

Any comments welcome...

Thanks :)

If you are only doing 15,000km a year petrols the way to go as otherwise you are paying twice as much for rego being a diesel ($440 a year I think I paid)

And as well as that manual 3 litre 1kz surfs are very rare so you would probably end up paying a premium for it, I know I wish my surf was manual but I've learnt to live with the auto as its probably the first toyota auto gearbox that I've liked, and I hate autos lol.

Haven't owned a 2.7 3RZ-FE engine but they have a reputation as being pretty indestructible, but for me towing the mighty intercooled 1kz was the only option viable.

And yep the fuel figures your mate said are true, I get 500kms with a lead foot and 600kms normal driving but the kzn185 series has a 65 litre tank not a 60

i had the same 2.7l engine in a extra cab hilux, i used it as my daily driver and carting around all my tools and wood. on the open road i was getting 100km per 10l and around town full off gear it was more like 11.5-12.5l per 100km, was costing about $40 for 250km a week. and that was driving with a roof rack and a too heavy right foot (dam work boots)
hope that helps abit

I used to own the 2.7L dual cab Hilux that Greg (WRNGLR) has now, and when I was running the little 30"x9.5" Maxxis Buckshots on the standard chrome rims, I was easily getting over 500km to a tank open road running. That dropped to 400-450 around town running, and then I threw a set of 33" Wranglers on it which understandably made the fuel consumption a bit worse off, but nothing crazy.

Wait till he replies with what he's getting for fuel figures now. He's running 33's still.

That's all great feedback, thanks guys..

Will be looking at putting only 31s and snorkel on it but realise that they will stick affect fuel use slightly.

Hi as Merhts said I have his old 2.7 Petrol D/C Hilux , 3RZ-FE , 5 speed manual, engine is same as Surf, loves to rev, full tank from empty or almost empty (no Fuel Light)costs about $120, 60 litre tank (need a bigger one), have constantly got 12.5 litres/100km running, Buckshot mudder 33's on 15x8 white steelies, tuff box on the back with recovery gear and (ropes, shovel, extinguishers, other shit) hilift jack on rear towbar and winch on the front, daily driver, off road uses bugger all really, fuel gauge stays on full for a while but when it starts to drop it goes down quite quickly, like I said , need a bigger tank.
No timing belt to replace is a real bonus

cheers
Greg

P.s Truck weighs about 2240kg with my fat arse in the drivers seat.

I have a 3RZ auto Surf. it has a best ever of 9.5km/ litre on a long trip. Day to day farm and commute fuel economy is around 7.3 km per litre. Not as good as i hoped.
However, i have crunched the numbers and unless you are doing more than 25000km per year, the 3RZ is still cheaper to own and run.
They are a great motor. I don't like filling up as often as i have to though.
The whole wagon is near bulletproof though, compared to virtually any other contemporary.

I had a 96 2.7 petrol manual surf for 6 years. 450 to a tank around town and up to 600 on a run. Compared to the diesel - cheaper rego, heaps quicker, much nicer to drive, and cheaper servicing.
It will tow 1.5T easily, by 2 ton you know you have something behind you. I've towed 2.5T from Rangiora to Wanaka and back though with no dramas.
My only moan really would be the diabolical ride quality.
