Changing valve stem seals on a 1HD-FT? Who's done it?

Post by bridgin »

Anyone changed their stem seals on their 1hd-ft? (24 valve) Landcruiser? Or had it done by a reputable mechanic in the Auckland area?

I haven't, and can't help with who is best to go to,

  But

You NEEEEEEEED to post a before pic/vid of it idling when cold, and then an after pic/vid.

Its my theory that its valve stem seal wear that causes the trademark blue smoke at cold/cool idle they all suffer from

I concur with your theory, blows blue smoke on start up every morning when cold and doesnt go away until the temp is up to the normal range, I could do it myself, have done it before on td42's but in all honesty it cant be fucked doing it, rather pay a good mechanic to do the job

What seals are you intending to use and who from, just got a price off Toyota for the 1HD-t seals and they were about $21 each. Going to get a price from Japan. The same seal is used in corolla's, corona's, hiluk's and dyna's
And a decarb set was $196 + gst

If you know the part number you can try www.toyotaonlineparts.com I replaced the flange on the back of my transfer case (LN106 Hilux) plus some driveshaft bolts etc for less than ¼ of the price quoted by the local toyota dealership, and that was including $60 for the freight from the US.

Seals are $2.05 for after market seals from STA Parts.

In Rover circles they do it with the head in place using compressed air in through the glow plug hole.

Drop a valve and its head off time to get it out though
