Silverstone MT117 285/85/16

Post by zukmeista »

Anybody know if these are still available and where from? Look like they would suit my needs, more aggressive than a normal MT but not quite a Simex.

You mean 285/75R16 mt117 sports? Cheap and can still get them. Have them on my Hilux.

I have them on my landy. Bought them at Palmside Motorsport a few years ago now but they don't keep 4wd tyres anymore just rally tyres. Last time I contacted Scobie tyres they said they were not available but are still on silverstone website. They are 865mm tall (34") when new not 900mm as stated on website. They work well when run at low pressures, 15psi or less.

Should have said that the 285/85 is a crossply. 285/75 sport is a radial but they have same pattern. The 85 is under light truck on the silverstone website and not with all the other mt117s in 4wd tyres section.

Thanks for the leads, I'll see what I can find.

So how are they on road? Whats the wear like on them? What width rims do you have them on? And how do they compare to say a Simex offroad?
Thanks.

The 85 profiles are not in stock in the country from what I understand but the 75s are. Wear on the road is not great but performance offroad is excellent.

Well they are a pretty aggressive crossply so never going to be great on road. They squirm a bit on wet manhole covers etc. They are surprisingly quiet at 100kmh (quieter than my old Kumho MTs) but very noisy around 55kmh where they seem to hit some sort of resonant frequency. They wear pretty well as long as inflated to 35psi, the centre band I think helps here.

Off road I have been pretty impressed with them. They are better than any radial MT I have tried especially on the coast but not as good as a simex. They really don't work on the hard clay/mudstone like slab hut etc. I think the centre band hinders here.

They have to be run at low pressures off road (or ride and grip are both poor) and high pressures on road (or massive understeer). In this respect they are not as forgiving as a radial.

I run them on a 16x7 steel discovery rims (Silverstone recommend 7-8"). On the whole I like em! Wouldn't want them on a daily but for the money pretty good.

Ok do you know if it is possible to get some brought in? As they seem to be perfect for what I want.

There are 4 on ebay uk for 700 GBP.
But I think they would be a daft choice, not because there is anything wrong with them because what happens if you open one up.
Also they used to be cheap, $1400 is too much.

$1400 is only $350 each, for the size and type of tyre I would think that's pretty cheap? And if one gets damaged just buy a new one?

I think you missed my point.
Its no problem to bring these in from the UK, but if you damage one, you can't just buy another one.

I have been looking locally for ages.
Mine where $180 each
