If you fit the duel mass system, they are quiter on a manual gear box setup than the solid flywheel type. The solid flywheel system can cause a pulsing rattle when at idle. As for the cost, they ar'nt much different.

The dual mass flywheel can slip like a clutch which is a pain in the arse. They may be quiter on the gear box by taking away some of the pulsation throught the box but they can also cause a headache when they slip.

Its note the flywheel that slips its the clutch!
The topic is about the flywheel. If you have opened up the duelmass you would see why they can not slip.

I have opened up many of them and they do slip!
they only have a diaphragm spring and a small clutch plate inside them with springs to allow them to move to take up the diesel pulsations.
I worked for a company that fixed all the vehicles for a large importer in CH CH and we struck many surfs with this problem.
We ended up taking the flywheel apart and having a small amount machined off to move the 2 halves of the flywheel closer together and put more pressure on the small clutch plate.
Some slipped so badly that it was easier to replace them with a standard flywheel.

One of the guys at work has just done his clutch/flywheel, his dual mass broke the springs and lost drive. After shopping aound for best price , he ended up getting a complete kit -- solid flywheel , clutch, from Lineside at Rangiora. He hasn't noticed any difference in the running of his vehicle.
Blackett Mechanical at Chaneys corner Belfast also do a solid flywheel conversion.
NO SLIP,
FITZY.
Or should that be " SLIPPERY " FITZY ???

We tried welding one up and then getting it balanced it looked bloody ugly +o(
but seemed to work ok.

hey andrew when i looked at putting a manual behind my 1KZ i was told that blacketts can make a solid flywheel for $200 approx (i think)

and they press your ring gear off you flexiplate and put it onto the solid flywheel. you will then need a clutch $500-$800 for a good one, then you will need a bellhousing off a 1KZ manual box which lineside sell for around $200, this adapts the 1KZ to your G52 box. you could use a R150F (2.4T EFI) or R151F (1KZ) which are stronger than the G52's. from memory leithfield runs a 150F behind his 1KZ but you still need the right bellhousing.
also what are you going to do about the electrics? run the computer or go to a manual fuel pump?
cheers marc

hey marc;have picked up a 2.4turbo box out of a 1990 surf.Does this mean its a R150f?I think i will get a manual computer from lineside & run that. Also swap the wiring loom from the doner vechile;stripping out any un wanted wires eg..electric windows etc. Will run std electronic pump, maybe later convert to manual.Only as it is one less thing to go wrong with no computer etc.

Is urs up & running yet?cheers andy

yeah i think it should be. i have 150f box that i pulled out of a 1990 surf. Someone can correct me if i'm wrong but as far as im aware the the R series box's were the only ones in hilux's (late model) and surfs with the push button fourwheel drive, these had a chain driven transfer (and a 23 spline input ito the transfer not 21 like G52's) rather than the more common geardriven one found in all of the solid axle hilux's. as for my truck i'm going out now to swap the brake master cylinder and a do a late night lap round town with a bit of luck!
