I have a high mount 8274 winch which I rebuilt with a giggle-pin main shaft and big motor etc and would like to use it on my new defender 90.

Question is how to mount this rather large object. Not wanting to check it into the grill either.

Like the look of the below bar and could I could actually build it but I know it would take a fair while to replicate.

Any ideas or options other than lots fabrication work?

Have a look in the states or the uk for a bumper or even a kit that you can get welded up back here

High mount winches are real popular in the uk. There should be plenty of options...

Or talk to toms offroad in chch or howat engineering up here in welly about getting one made exactly how you want

he will be able to order a bullbar to suit the 8274.
there is not a lot to mount to on the front of a defender , so custom bar work / winch mount is going to require a lot of fabrication .

With a 8274 if you don't recess it into the grill it will stick out a fair way and without mounting it up fairly high it will affect your approach angle.

I spent a fair bit of time measuring and mocking up before settling on a low mount. However I built the bar to take both if I decide to fit the 8274 I have sitting in the shed . (will have to cut grill and move trans cooler)

Winch plus bar work plus fairlead = a big nose...................

I've mocked it up as too. Looks pretty cool mounted high but the winch is quite a large air low obstacle! Thinking a Runva low mount may be an option. Pity though as I have a nice gigglepin'ed 8274 on the bench

why not centre mount it in the chassis (possibly have to box over it in the tub)
My idea of ideal would be to keep that big bit of change out of sight,
face it backwards in in the chassis run the line through some alloy fairleads(if synthetic) to a snatch block shackled past a rear fairlead to your rear bar then through some turnbuckle eyes along a chassis rail to your front fairlead.
so basically giving you the option to winch forward in a normal sense or backwards by snubbing your front hook against its fairlead and dragging out the snatch block to the rear.

This is a good idea. However, I would have done that on my SII but this amount of mods to a 2014 defender would make me an exceptional land rover enthusiast.

I did in fact have an original landy worm drive hydraulic on my SII. Best winch I've ever had or seen.

Be that exceptional Land Rover enthusiast.

s2 or defender it doesn't matter,
they aren't building them any more so set it up for your best case scenario.
I'd sooner cut up the tub on a new truck than go all rangi on the grill

Built an 8274 mount once, very simple. I reckon fabricating is a much better option:
- you can get the winch where you want it (personally I would mount the 8274 into the grille as otherwise you will lose a lot of approach angle)
- you can make decent mounts for the chassis
- and decent recovery points, light & radio mounts etc
- you can galvanise it so it won't rust.

the tray for the 8274 is pretty simple - there is a diagram with the winch.
