Is there anything to look out for when replacing the gearbox on a 1992 3.9L petrol Discovery? Any advice appreciated (or gearboxes :D )

Yep it's bloody heavy and a trans jack is a great idea. It's also difficult to balance. Have fun! :D

If 1992 it will be a 3.5 V8.
Remove radiator fan cowling and fan from engine.
Remove centre cubby console along with gear lever etc.
Drill out rivets on the gearbox lever gaiter.
Remove exhaust, or at least the twin 'Y' section from manifolds down
Remove front and rear drive shafts
Remove gearbox cross member
Undo gearbox mounts and slightly lower gearbox and transfer box.
This should now allow you enough access to the bell housing bolts.

What is the problem with the gearbox?
being an LT77 a common problem is wear on the output shaft splines and stripping out of the input gear in transfer case.

Thanks for the info.
There is a horrible bearing noise, it has a bit of a leak from somewhere. could rebuild it maybe but until I saw it in pieces I couldn't be sure if my skill level would be up to it.

Anyone know a good mechanic for these in the christchurch area?
