discovery eating rear shocks

hey guys have a d1 discovery has a 2 inch lift and no sway bars. i seem to be chewing out rear shocks. they are maxi trac +2inch. truck does flex quite well shocks seem to be rubbing the cover over the chrome shaft on the housing. cant see any bent mounts. springs arnt dislocating . do i need to look at a longer shock or i have read about removing the bottom shock mount cups to help the shock keep straight by not binding up the bush on the metal cups.

Mine rub on the Toyota... Seems to rub the paint off....and polish it a bit... Apart from cosmetics its all good.

Note: Covers rub on the reservoir tube housing.

what do you mean by eating them, leaking, bent shaft, flogged bushes or something else?

seems to rub then knocks when driving. like lost oil in shock. then on last trip up wilber force to hunting spot just driving up river bed shock snapped in half.

Check the compressed lenght of the shock verse the compressed movement of the axle. Easiest way is to remove the springs and then jack up of lift one wheel leaving the other wheel to droop to full extention. If the shock bottoms out first then that is your problem. On hard articulation then seals are bring distroyed by bottoming out.

How good are the bushes top and bottom?
Pull the shocks off and measure how long they really are against standard ones, compressed and extended.

Could be you are getting very good travel/articulation, but then again you say springs don't dislocate, so probably not.

The other point is what size tyres are you using and on what rims? Offset?

Also which way around have you got the bottom washers? Are they hitting on the 'cups' at articulation? You have to reverse fit the washers if you still have the 'cups', otherwise cold chisel the 'cups' off top and bottom.

235 85 16s on std rims. have measured shocks and are just 2 inch longer than factory. yes i had read about cups on bottom shock mounts will remove tonight. the bushes are all new as shocks not that old. thinking of going for some 3-4 inch shocks and make my own top mount.
