Radar detectors

looking at getting a radar detector, drove home from auckland yesterday and had mates V1 on board, think it saved me 2-3 times, the 4 k tolerance is crap... anyway who has one and thinks thiers is the ducks nuts. looking V1, STi, escort redline/passort type of unit.

v1 or sti are known to be the top of the range so if you have the money to get these definitely do get one of those 2.

I brought a beltronics rx65 after lossing my licence. Once got licence back it has saved my ass so many times its paid for itself 3 times over. i Paid $650 for it 6 years ago - still goes fine today aye.

I got my rx65 in 2006. still goes well. stationary vehicle cams have changed frequency or the way they detect though I think. it stopped picking them up a wee while ago. still flags ka band at 1-2+ km depending on terrain.

Have used beltronics and redline. The redline was more sensitive and gave an earlier warning.

Mobile camera have always been hard to detect as they shoot there beam at 23 degrees across the rd ..so not much signal coming down the road , & they are also very low powered as there range only has to be short .

I use a GPS speedo app on my phone if i am not sure how accurate the speedo is in the vehicle i am driving and stick to that never have issues with 4 km tolerance

this is what ive also found. basically you see the vans before it goes off and it wont go off till you are almost on top of them which still is before the snap. its also motion sensed as well as cars in front give me more warning as they set the signal going

I've found that my radar detector became redundant, as the approaching cops simply learnt to turn their machine off, and then flick it on as they come over the hill or round the corner. Yes my radar detector alerted me, but by then they had a speed reading, so it was too late. (they can ticket you at the speed the machine first picked you up at, not just the speed that it locked you in at.)
So I don't use it anymore, as i've got older I've grown more responsible. No tickets in the last six years. And my vehicles for long trips have cruise control. Saves a lot of ticket:)

For anyone that drives anywhere as part of there job i believe these are essential - for momentary lapses heading downhill 6 lane highways an getting caught at 5kmh over is ridiculous. It is also not worth skimping out on a budget radar!

I install valentines in all work / private cars.

Check these guys out - they will service radars bought from them. Worth the extra $100.

Yes, this is very true..."Flickers", we call them

I bought a Valentine 1 about 5 years ago when I had some coin(!) and it's so sensitive that you're alerted when they flick on to catch the cars (or cars) down the road in front of you.

The alert sound is very 1980's but certainly works!

I have no need for a radar detector. For me to get a speeding ticket in my old girl I would need a big downhill, a tail wind and probably likes of Usain Bolt running along behind pushing.

I have the escort 9500iX, it is awesome, has saved me multiple times.
they are not cheap at a touch over a grand, but I need my license for my living so i wasn't about to buy a cheap one.

It is very sensitive and having GPS installed it also knows where all the fixed cameras are and warns you of these as well.

On a slight side bar , does anyone know how accurate a speedo has to be for a wow these days ?

Back when I sat my licence a requirement to get a wof (part of the theory questions) was a speedo that was a curate to 7% . If that was still the case how can they ticket you at 4% .
