Hey all.

Trying to free up afew ponies from our g16a engine.
Figured gutting the cat would help.

Has anyone done this? Did it make a difference?

Im assuming its got abit of crap blocking it from being over 24 years old and wouldn't really be doing much good.

Have given the engine a good servicing which has helped just trying to get every thing I can out of the motor without cracking it open as it was just shy on power for alot of the hills we attempted.

Was going to make an egr block plate aswell.

Headers + 2" exhaust, will help prevent head issues and maybe add some HP.

to start with your dealing with a tired old engine that's probably driven around the world a few times, being realistic you can get bolt on (or unbolt in your case ) power by playing around with bits and pieces to try and get it to breath a bit better and get a few extra ponies out of it but don't expect any bolt on mods to wrench your false teeth out when you hit the gas pedal or cause the clutch to fail with all the extra hp to unleash it and get the real hp out of your engine you need to build a new engine with good flow characteristics, shortblock, head, cam, valves etc to get it breathing to bring up the hp and torque. sometimes its just easier and cheaper to stick with what you've already got or rip it out and find something bigger with the hp and performance you want that'll fit in the hole .... and sometimes you have to make the hole a bit bigger to squeeze it all in there

Good sound advice. The engine just felt like if I could get an extra 5% out of it then it would make it up alot more hills. Only just felt like it was underpowered. The engines only done 95,000kms and has a good service history. I plan on doing a compression test in afew weeks to get a better idea of the health of it.

Its just the wifes new fun car to get us into abit of offroading so am trying to free up power on the cheap. New fuel filter/spark plug/air filter has helped so might just gut cat and see how it goes.
Worst case scenario is it does nothing.
I guess im just eager to do abit of tinkering in the shed.

Not expecting to get the world out of a 1.6L.

As already suggested, put aftermarket headers on it and larger exhaust. No cat. It will reduce the chance of the head cracking, quite common on those motors.
Will likely get the 5% you are looking for too....
