A Question for Android OS Geeks

Post by mercutio »

I was wondering how easy or difficult would it be to use an android device to run an EFI system obviously there would need to be a control system with an interface between the two is this a mad idea or is it do able.

I am just thinking on screen feel free to shoot me down in flames but if doing so please explain why things wouldn't work

There are Android apps (Torque Pro) that can read OBDII signals and display all sorts of info. The problem you have is that it requires OS as well as some hardware interface to control everything. Software part is probably the easy bit, what hardware interface are you planning on suggesting?

I use a standard Bluetooth OBDII reader to read, scan and clear any errors reported by the PCM through Torque Pro on my Android phone. I can actually run it as a data logger as well, and overlay with GPS recording for track use (not that I have any inclination to do). It also has a nice array of displays that a normal dashboard doesn't show, like O2 sensor voltages as they cycle through, throttle position, engine load, etc...

I am thinking about a home built EFI along the lines of megasquirt but using an Android device as the processor

While almost anything can be done, i wouldn't consider it a good idea to use an android phone as a base to control it.

Reading the outputs from an dedicated efi system would be much better idea, as android has far to much overhead and other processes to compete for resources. Think if the phone crashed it would take along time to reboot and be able to restart the motor, embedded systems take next to no time to be restarted

If you still wanted to do it on andriod you would have to re write the operating system to only be a efi/display as apps have limited access to direct hardware and you would need to interface with inputs/outputs.

If your a software dev or have a urge to develop something a smaller embedded system would suit your needs written in a low level language like c or c ++ and then write an app to read the outputs from the system.

If you really want to experiment, Android device will have to have most of its other functions disabled. It would be an expensive experiment as well.

Its pretty easy to put a $20 bluetooth module into the megasquirt and run MS Droid on your phone/tablet

Interesting question. What about Tapatalk app with ORE? Other forums I follow use it successfully.
