Isuzu Mu 3.1D Running Rough and smokey

Hi all,
I have a mate with an Isuzu Mu 3.1D.
This Morning ( about 2 Regress outside ) it was very hard to start and when it did start it ran very rough, very similar to a car thats missing a Cylinder.
When driving it was smoking very badly, we turned the Overdrive of but it made no difference. We then stoped and turned it off and back on, drove it and it was fine, no rough running or any smoke.. Strange right..? 
Could this be cause by blocket injectors?
If you have any help it would be greatly appreciated.
