Flex gains for 92 LWB paj

Finally started some work on the new (to me anyway) girl, 92 LWB paj.

Thought I would detail the flex gains step by step out of interest.

Running on 32 inch swampers on safari rims, no lift (body or suspension)

As standard had 340mm flex/travel before lifting the front wheel (had 300kgs of bricks in the rear, using the paj as a large wheel barrow)

Removed front sway bar 415 mm flex

Cut bump stops 470 mm flex

Removed rear Sway bar 510 mm flex.

Overall gain of 170mm over standard (50%) not to bad at all.

Theres probably another 20-30mm if there was no load in the back, so could be looking at a maximum of 540mm ?

At this amout of flex, the cvs are at the maximum angle that you would want, the 32's at the front are just touching the flares.

The rears are tucked inside the wheel well and have another 2 inches of clearance.

Still left to do is remove one bolt from a rear radius arm, and shave the rear stops (need to check how far untill tyres touch/shocks max out).
Best guess is another 50mm to be had, may not sound like much, but will bring the total to 590mm (73% gain)

From this have discovered will need a 1 inch body lift to run the 33's with this flex, a 2 inch lift is not needed. May still go the 2 inch lift so I can raise the fuek tank.

Not in the league if sold front ends, but not bad for IFS (its for shopping)

Interesting - cranked the front torsions about 10 turns to raise the front level with the rear.

Now flexes 590mm - not a bad gain.

I think i am at the limit without doing any serious mods - any thoughts ?

No Problem,

What do you want the pics of, tyre clearance, up-close of the suspension, let me know and will do this weekend.

Will drop out on of the rear radius rod bolts (as Jtop has done) and see if there is any more gain (will leave the shocks dicsonected at the rear)

First Pic -radius rod bolt removed, shocks disconected.
The rear fexed untill the spring almost fell out ! shows the potential however of extending the rear shocks, should be able to gain an extra 60mm from what I have now - Interesting to note that the front end had hardly started flexing at this stage.

This is how she currently stands, with the rear shocks attached and radius bolts in - 590mm

Image

Close up of front right suspension - still have to install low profile bolts and shaved bump stops

Close up of the left side

Image

Close up of upper bump stop location left side, stop needs to be re-installed, does not need trimming

And finally the right side

The next step will be to either raise the rear lower shock mounts, or to extend the shocks, as the standard shocks still have about 50mm of up travel left.

Combine this with removal of one of the rear radius bolts and we shoul be lookig at about 650mm+ of overall flex.

Got to say Im very impressed, Ive got same truck but the 3.5l and running 33" with 50mm torsion bar raise and bigger springs with 50mm lift. Think its time for me to head into the garage and do a little work.

Good job man.

Daz, thanks for that.

Basically this is about as far as you can go for no money spent.

The hardest part was removing the rear sway bar - had to disconnect both shocks and one radius rod to get it out (was tempted to get the 4 1/2 inch angle grinder onto it)

Confirms that a body lift is not needed for 33's - the left front is touching the guard in the second photo, so may get away with triming the guard back inside the plastic flare.

For me the next step is going to be extending teh rear shocks around 40mm (as still have about 50-60 mm up travel left) and making a removable pin to replace one of the rear radius bolt.

Will post some pics when its done.

Will be interested to see if you get similar results, let us know how you get on.

It can be done with just undoing the bottoms of both shocks..... But by the time you work out how with twisting here and there and everything - couldn't have probably had the arm undone...

Tried - I guess I just dont have the skills

Anyway already had one bolt out trying the extra flex :)

Nah mat

Just got no time at the moment, the inlaws are here from the UK for 3 weeks, getting the garden sorted for the new dog which we get in a couple of weeks. Been working on the boat for weeks, not even had the time to get the truck dirty for a ages.

What's the saying "All work and no play............

Think I might look at doing the ball joint flip and sway bay quick disconnects next.
