1hdt starting issue when cold

Post by a80crewza »

Started her up this morning and it almost stalled the revs were so low, so I revved it up a bit to get it going so it didn't stall. Usually revs are high enough so it doesn't stall. It has the cold start system removed. Turns over sweet, just when it's on it struggles to get the revs unless I help it. Any ideas?

Thanks.

the start system is there for a reason ;)

also what oil are you using?
maybe change to a lower W spec.

depends on temps. this cold snap this week would make it somewhat cold down there.

if you can a suitable oil thats 5w-40 you will find the cold starting and running a lot better. the catch is finding one that your engine likes. penrite do a diesel 5w-40.

i don't know the winter spec on those engines, it may be a thinner oil for winter eg use a 10w30 or 5w30.

As mentioned. Cold start s there for a reason. It cranks the timing up when it's cold which makes it idle properly. It's an auto choke pretty much. Just use your hand throttle for a min to let it warm up. Nothing wrong with the oil. If you get thinner oil you run the risk of hammering your big end bearings.

going to a lower W won't make much difference to oil thickness at operating temp. the catch is a 5w40 won't last as long as a 15w40 but that may not be an issue depending oil change interval.
if the weather is cold going to a thinner won't harm the engine, it may be even better. easy way to tell is oil pressure gauge.
