Newbie in Nelson

Hi guys n gals

I've got myself a 2.8 MU. Picked it up for $1000 with a few issues. Is my daily at the moment, have fitted new rear springs and shocks all round.
Still on 31" tyres but 32" are on the agenda in a month or 2 along with a 2" body lift a few other cert needed mods at the same time.

Can't wait to get the 32 muds on then I can join the local club

Is there much non club 4wd stuff around here? With all the forestry it seems access to tracks is a bit limited.

I do intend to join the club, the only reason I haven't yet is the rule about mud tyres. Otherwise I'd have been in a year ago.
I just want to go for a play!

There are a few spots close by for a play, but we head out of Nelson for decent 4wd trips. Reefton, Westport etc.
The club has access to a few more local areas/farms so it's a good option to join up with them. We are planning on re joining at some point.
What was the rule about tyres that has stopped you from joining the club?

I've gone to chch a few times to go out with mates, in fact it was a Waipara river trip that convinced me I needed a 4wd

It's delayed, not stopped. Just no budget for $1200-1800 of wheels and tyres. But hopefully that will be sorted soon, should have the funds available. Then will just need to find the time to make them fit!

That's a pretty hard out rule?! .... Sure that's not only applicable on certain graded trips? Just never heard of a 4wd club that only allow's members to join with aggressive mud terrain tyres...

Yeah that's what I thought, but I have talked personally to the club safety officer and it is the rule.

I asked it good AT tyres counted as "approved" and was told no, they have to be full mud tyres.

Seems it stems from a few incidents back in the day when they were out on some trips and the weather got a bit wet and they had some trucks slide down a hill.
It's pretty hard to not go over a hill when you go for a drive around here!

This rule is that on club trips it is the trip organiser ( the person that sets up the trip ) makes the call on which tyres you will need, its a safety thing, plus some land owners tell the club what tyres they can use.

Only some trips need mud tyres. There's no rule stopping you from joining up now, then up-speccing your vehicle to suit(and I'm sure everyone in club would be glad if you do). If you stick to shiney type trips in the mean time then AT tyres will be more than adequate. Or you could ride with someone else to get a feel for the club environment- see whether its for you or not. (plus you'll get a better idea of what tyres work in nelson ground conditions. could save you from buying a set of not-so-good tyres..)

Join on up. They're allowed on some trips (trip leaders discretion) and the more people with bigger tyres then more likely the rule to be changed.
Many trips are run with someone with bigger than 33" tyres on it.
You're more likely to be told no for the way you drive than tyre size, as a newbee I'm sure you'd at least be welcomed along on big tyres for a few trips until you got some smaller tyres to suit rule (if it hadn't been changed by then..)

Really? because I spoke to the safety officer after the guy at the 4x4 centre and they both said full mud only, no AT's at all. Just like the website says.

That is correct, They get around the Nelson club rule of 33s max by belonging to the Blenheim club. Then they are counted as guests and are allowed on Nelson trips.

I also have 2 sets of 35s so don't belong to the Nelson club.

I do agree with the Mud tire rule for safety reasons. When I used to run Nelson trips it makes it hard to turn people away when they turn up with ATs . Not only is it dangerous but others have to wreck their trucks towing them all the time.
