Break upgrade on 86 hilux pickup

Got my Hilux and am looking at upgrading the breaks

I know I can get vented ifs rotors and callipers for the fronts

but what are my options for the rear and Im also looking at drive shaft mounted hand break like from 4wdstuff.

Will I need to upgrade master cylinder and booster?

just with 35's lift and a lot more power I think its only prudent to do something to breaks also needs to be able to pass the cert too.

Ideas welcomed

thanks
Ash

Do a search on here, quite a lot of info on brake conversions.

here is a start http://www.offroadexpress.co.nz/Forums/viewtopic.php?f=22&t..

vented rotors aren't really going to make your lux stop any better all they will do is stay cooler assuming the vents can breath and aren't packed full of woodhill mud and shit, the problem you've got is the extra leverage and stopping power needed with the larger rolling diameter tyres. PBR VH40 and VH44 remote boosters will give you significantly more clamping pressure on your callipers but be aware they can also create a lot of extra heat resulting in brake fade, probably more of an on road than an off road problem. You can rip out the rusted up old rear drums and do a disc conversion, that dosent really give you extra braking on the rear what it does is makes your rear brakes more reliable and maintains braking efficiency rather than drums and shoes that lose their effectiveness pretty quick with a bit of water and mud and shit in there. Be aware that those disc carden handbrakes that go on the back of your transfer case are pretty cool and look pretty cool but they are also pretty vulnerable to getting knocked around and smacked off when your bashing over the usual shit you bash over, handbrakes on rear callipers are pretty effective and reliable :D

Myt have to look into that remote booster and the vented and bigger callipers sounds like the business. Trucks a pure toy but I wana be able to drive it on the road to and from the tracks not worried bout discs getting full of crap nothing a good w.blast cant fix n if more heat from greater clamping from booster the vented rotors would be the way to go. What about the proptional valve on the rears? As my trucks lifted do I needa change this to suit height over standard?

have a look at my thread. front brakes on the first page and hand break/rear brakes later on.

Stops fine on the 35s. Bigger booster will help you out 80 series ones is bigger than the surf one I used.

Looks like I even summerised it. copy and paste

BRAKES

I have used

80 series master cylinder. I got one that was off an HJ80 though from what I can tell any non abs 80 series one will fit. These are a larger diameter (1inch) and apparently have correct valving in them for rear disk brakes. These bolt on you just need to bend the brake lines around as they mount to the opposite side of the cylinder from the hilux one.

I ended up putting a ln130 booster on as I had one lying around and it was bigger than the ln106 one.

Front callipers are off a surf V6. They have s13 stamped onto them. These are they ones with the biggest pistons, they have two large pistons on each side that are the time size.

Front rotors are LN106 vented rotors these are the same as 60 series cruiser

Woodward rear proportioning valve (not sure if this is needed with the 80 series master but will keep it in anyway. EDIT actually this is good as you can adjust it nicely.

On the rear i have lj78 rotors and mr2 rear calipers. I uses SNR calliper mounting brackets. These do not work on the standard hilux rear end they will only fit on the wider surf rear axles (either coil or leaf).

The SNR brackets come with two soild spacers for each side I had to have 3mm taken off these so that the callipers didn't rub on the rotor.

I had real troubles bleeding the brakes until I realised the callipers were on the wrong sides meaning the nipples are not at the top.

how mine were
