Not sure but the max reading will vary depending on whether your egt probe is pre-turbo (in exhaust manifold) or post turbo (in dump pipe) so it'll be easier to get an answer if you specify where yours is.

650ish is recommended as a max for most trucks.

Putting it in the dump pipe is easier as you can remove it and drill/tap it off the truck but in the manifold will give much more accurate readings.

you can put a sensor in the egr port of the manifold. its just has to be long enough and it can be tricky finding one with long enough probe.
temp wise i would max it no more than 700c pre turbo. i'm running around 600 odd with a boot load of smoke down low (no boost comp).

Mines in the manifold in the egr port which is slightly off to the side so I suspect the true reading would be slightly higher.

I had a standard one in the egr port and then got a long one and it reads quite a bit hotter now 50-100 deg ish

Is yours intercooled 1kz_surf? That will make a big difference to your egt readings. My 1kz surf is factory intercooled and the Auber probe is middle of the manifold before the turbo. I get average of 360ºC at 100kmh (not towing) with a 3" dump and turbo. I have also disconnected the egr and pcv is sent to a catch can.
The max I can get it to under full load is 784ºC (which from what i have read here and elsewhere is higher than you want to see regularly) but I plan to fit a water/meth injection system to automatically come on at say 650 ish.

Oh ya all good...the point's still valid about intercooling though...will drop your temps nicely

yes/no.
technically its undersized but surf guys consider it oversized on the 2.4. seams like a low rpm cam with biggish turbo for higher rpm.
but chuck it on a 2.8 which has atmo/higher rpm cams its a bit different.
its also a very old tech turbo. carbon seal turbo's should be left to draw through carby turbo engines.
