My chllenger is up for a service and im doing all filters, the air filter is pretty weird, the type with a plastic sleeve that has fins that resemble a turbine, what the heck is all that for? and can you fit a k&n or other filter?
hmmmmm
air filter options,
Re: air filter options,
Hi, the fins are there to act as a precleaner, by attempting to create a centrifuge inside the housing, throwing the heavier particles to the outer wall and then down to the bottom once they have lost their momentum.
You may be interested to know (and no I am not intending to start The Great Filter Debate) buuuuut after talking to a dyno owner who has spent many hours testing many different types of filters vs oem, the oems came out on top power wise. Bugger says the guy with a carbon fibre airbox and k&n style on his diesel... Some aftermarket products were either nearly as good or the same, some noticeably worse. But unless you are running in a heavily controller motorsport class I would imagine you want good filtration. That could be an entirely different discussion lol. With the cotton k&n styles, it is the oil which stops most of the particles, so regular filter maintenence on these types of product is very important.
Just my 2c...hope it helps

I used to modify the existing housings on various diesels to take a pod style filter inside the original housing, and while I was at it, removed the plastic expansion boxes located along the intake system. I found there was always a piece of plumbing pipe the right diameter to take the pod on one side and then fit into the pipework on the other. Used pod style as invariably there were no aftermarket options for those big round filters.
As an aside I was in repco getting a filter set for a 1kz hiace a few days ago, and there were two brands available: Ryco (repcos top brand) and then Silverline. Apparently a bit cheaper. Just another option.

Re: air filter options,
Shop around, I have found huge variations in price between repco, bnt and other parts suppliers.
If you are driving offroad or on shingle you want a decent paper element filter as they have finer filtration than most performance filters, and change it more often. Or at least blow it out.
