Hi guys,

Manukau Winch Challenge is on again.

Date is confirmed: October 17 & 18 2014

Four classes of competition, same as last year: Manukau, Club, Challenge and Modified.

Wicked. Any ideas yet on what property it will be held on this year?

Onewhero Farm seems to be the most likely site for both Friday night and Saturday.

I will be doing a survey of all potential venues in the next few weeks. Don't rule out a wild card.

Hey Guys,

For those of you who know Hamish (Event Director last year & Head Marshal prior to that), he is now a proud father. Inga gave birth this morning at about 4.00am to Alexi. 3.8kg or 8lb 6oz in old speak. Mother and baby all well but Hamish is now under great stress with a paint brush.

A little off topic I know but I'm sure those of you who know Hamish and Inga will wish them all the best.

Outlaw class??

"Modified" (which is included above) is the North Island version of "Outlaw" class.

what about running south island outlaw class so we can come up from down here?

errr .....you'll be running in the modified class

The way I have read it checker head is saying that regardless of your hydro steer buggy or say a tractor registered as a suzuki samuri, will all be grouped under N.I. Modified class.

Your buggy? Is it a production veichle?

so what u are saying is I can bring a trials truck with a winch from the south to it and be classed as a mod class. sounds good to me we might see u there

I am assuming you have read the rules?

I can't see where it says you can't have hydro steering. (only had a quick skim read though)

Bernie from Manukau club runs hydro steering (or maybe just hydro assist) in modified class so pretty sure you will be fine.

Generally speaking, if you comply with your islands rules, you will be welcome in the equivalent class an the other islands events.

If there is any grey area the obvious thing to do would be ring the Manukau club and ask directly if your particular vehicle will be welcome. PM Dave (who started this thread) for an appropriate phone number?

Vehicle Rules for Modified (Outlaw) Class
24 CHASSIS MODIFICATION
24.1 50% of the chassis between the axles, in one continuous section must be from an OEM production based 4WD vehicle.
(a) It must retain the same number of cross members as OEM.
(b) It must retain factory profile.
(c) It may be strengthened.
25 BODY MODIFICATION
25.1 The bonnet must have a secondary catch.
25.2 All vehicles must run a minimum of a half door.
25.3 Other body modifications are unrestricted.
26 ENGINE MODIFICATION AND LOCATION
26.1 There is no restriction on engine type.
26.2 There is no restriction on engine location.
26.3 The engine may be modified to include:
(a) Super chargers.
(b) Turbo chargers.
(c) Intercoolers.
(d) Alternative engine management systems and fuel systems.
26.4 Replacement engines from any automotive engine manufacturer are permitted.
26.5 Snorkels and aftermarket air filters are unrestricted.
26.6 Oil coolers, filters and their attachments are unrestricted.
26.7 There is no restriction on radiator type, number or placement. Any coolant pipes must be to a safe standard as well as hard piped and insulated if located within the vehicle cabin.
27 ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
27.1 All batteries must be secured adequately.
27.2 Batteries mounted in the cabin must be enclosed and vented to the outside unless the battery is a sealed unit.
27.3 A mechanical battery isolation switch for the battery(s) that provide power to the engine, ignition and fuel pump is required. The switch must be within easy reach of both the Driver and Co-driver when they are seated in the vehicle with their full seat belt harnesses on. It must be clearly marked and it’s ‘on’ and ‘off’ positions easily recognised. This switch may isolate the negative terminal.

28 PROTECTION
28.1 Vehicles must be fitted with a minimum of a six point roll cage for rollover protection. The roll cage must be manufactured to NZFWDA, CCDA, ORANZ or Motorsport NZ specifications. Documented proof of cage specification or accredited certification will be required.
29 VEHICLE CERTIFICATION & STANDARDS
29.1 4X4 Challenges NZ Inc. will produce a vehicle Log Book when a correctly completed application is received and when the appropriate fee is paid. Further information and an application form are available for download at www.4x4challenges.org.nz.
29.2 All vehicles must have a valid 4X4 Challenges NZ Inc. Log Book.
29.3 All vehicles must have third party insurance cover.
29.4 Vehicles must be LVVTA certified if required.

north vs south events allow SI outlaw class to compete under NI rules in the north island but I dunno about non N vs S comps your going to have to ask the event organisers what the go is there

Modified and Outlaw are essentially the same thing, 100% hydro steer will not keep you out of the above classes in ether the north or south island. "Checkerhead" is right, I have full hydro steer in my truck and have competed on both islands

ok I hear you really I do. That being said, this is probably not the place to discuss rule differences between the islands.

Now with that said; we all (any host club) have the right to make previsions through supplementary rules to run whatever classes we want. And to be honest with you, I cannot remember once being asked by anyone with a rally/trials truck old or new if they could come along and compete, the interest just did not seem to be there, till now.
Will we add a rally truck class for one truck? Maybe not, will we for two trucks? We would think about it. A whole different ball game if you could come up with three or more, guaranteed.

There is another club , not a million miles from Manukau, who may well enter several trials trucks if there was a class for them.

Like I said, until now, we have had little to no interest shown by anyone with a rally truck.
This sounds a little like which came first, the chicken or the egg? "if there was I class for me, I would have entered"
Ok, I do not have sole discretion on whether or not to add a class for the rally truck guys, it will be a committee decision, personally I think it would be great to see this. If indeed there is an interest shown, and not a third party interest, by that I mean don't tell me there are rally trucks wanting to enter our winch challenge, the Rally truck guys themselves need to make it known, and they need to do it NOW.
It is Saturday morning, we have a meeting on this Tuesday night. If indeed there is a definite interest, I will put it to the committee.

They tried the rally trucks a few years back down at the Whakatane event. None of the rally trucks could keep up and not many survived the weekend, as they are built too light for winch challenge type comps.

Personally i dont think that quite applies now. With the cowper and howie buggies out there now i think they a plenty tough enough. And cooling issues have well been sorted. That said they also drink sh-t loads of juice so feul cells would be the only issue i could think of.
Majority if C and D buggies are now driving where you just cannot climb so they would not need a large winch.
If the drivers ever did move into the winch challenge comps it would completely change the whole sport. Ie go and spend a couple of days at a nationals trails to understand what and where the buggies are currently driving bogs included

Hi guys,
Excellent feedback. We really do need objective feedback from past and potential new competitors.
What worked, what didn't work and why.
This is not a free-for-all! We need to determine what we need to address in our format to make it more representative of the 4WD winch challenge community.
As Bernie says, we are having a meeting on Tuesday night where we will be discussing and confirming basic rules, supplementary rules, classes of competition, event location(s), etc.
We need to know what competitors think!

It's been a long road but most issues have now been resolved.

Entry forms will be sent to previous competitors by email this weekend.

In about a week I will have further information posted on the Manukau 4WD website.

I will post a link here when the webmaster gets back from Raro.

Its a shame to read this. While I hadnt intended to turn my buggy into a dedicated winch comp truck I had a blast at the Kiwi Challenge and it would have been fun to try the odd solo event.

I guess I will have to go backwards and build a piece of OEM chassis into my next truck

Is there any opportunity for new entrants in club/modified class or do those who have competed before get the spots first?

Andy, I think I read your question correctly... there is no preference for someone who has competed before, just because it's your first competition does not mean you will be tossed out just because someone who had competed before leaves it to the last minute. It really is first in first served.
