ac as air compressor?
ac as air compressor?
Just looking at setting up my on board air in my highlux
Was wondering what setting I should set my pressure switch to?
As in how much psi can these commy ac compressors handle?
I think original pump is stuffed when clutch is engaged its gota real bad ticking noise was giving pressure but now its not mind you its probally has had water sand mud n everything else in it hadnt sealed the holes on it before I went out wheeling lol good thing theres pick a part lol!
Thanks
Ash.

Re: ac as air compressor?
The aircon compressor can put out around 600+psi. A pressure switch around 100psi is ideal so it's similar to a standard compressor and with an air tank good for running air tools as well as tyre inflation. Make sure there is a relief valve fitted as well!

Re: ac as air compressor?
Mine is running at 90psi with a 9kg fire extinguisher for a tank
Waiter...there is a drought in my glass.
Re: ac as air compressor?
Sweetas well looks like ill be busy replacing my ac compressor 2oro. And setting up system with spare air tank ive got. Thanks for info guys

Re: ac as air compressor?
The hard part is keeping the compressor lubricated as an ac system has the oil in the refrigerant.
Re: ac as air compressor?
couple of sprays of crc I herd each use or so. doesn't or wont get used much only when I go for a trip out somewhere.

Re: ac as air compressor?
i just put a T junction in the crank case ventilation pipe that returns to the air intake and plumbed it to the inlet on the AC compressor and the outlet to the tank. by passed high/low pressure switches(just have one on the dash) and set the valve on the tank to release a 90 psi.

Re: ac as air compressor?
This is what I did. It works a treat and runs air tools

Re: ac as air compressor?
I squirt some multipurpose in the intake hose before a trip. I have a 90/80 pressure switch, a release value at 120, and a one way valve so the compressor doesn't see pressure all the time.
I am onto my second compressor but I use it a lot. Because its quick and easy I often air up multiple trucks.
A compressor every few years is a low cost system.

Re: ac as air compressor?
A guy I work with has this set up on his MU, his first compressor died very quickly as he didn't have enough oil internally in the compressor. The Isuzu compressor is a piston type and they need to have oil in the mechanical part of the compressor not just the compressor side. In normal operation this oil slowly gets used but it goes into the refrigerant and ends up back in the compressor. In an onboard air system this oil ends up in your tank and not returned to the compressor.
Most Commodore compressors are not a piston type and need more lubricant in the gas.
His current compressor has an oil fitting on the side to oil the internals as well as on oil level indicator on the side, His intake also goes into the engine breather.
The outlet goes through a one way valve to the tank, he has his pressure switch set at 120 and no release valve.
Building a simple air-oil separator to put in the outlet and plumbing the oil back into the inlet would make it last a very long time.

Re: ac as air compressor?
yes this is one on my next jobs to do. I was going to pull one down and workout how they oil the piston side of things and hopefully modify it to keep oil in one side and out of the compressor side. Might need to put in some seals or o'ring grooves on the main shaft... And block off some passages.
Don't know if its doable until I pull it apart..

Re: ac as air compressor?
so my compressors a Delphi V5 car ac compressor
http://intl2008.en.alibaba.com/product/ ... _pump.html
Would this work as a on board air pump ive installed tank and other bits.
have cut bigger line and put and air filter on this and the smaller line ive got going to my tank however when its running im not building any pressure and when I block the end of the smaller outlet pipe it stops sucking from the inlet?
whats causing this?
not enough oil in the compressor? itself
where would I fill this from?
Also I get quite a bit of oil blowing out of the outlet when I let it free flow and give the engine some revs?

Re: ac as air compressor?
so I ripped apart my older AC compressor and its a 5 piston type one and ive read online that you need to block the oil return hole or something like that.
also I think this may be why this compressor died or didn't work properly all this corrosion and shit.

Re: ac as air compressor?
I would go out about once a month and air up 2-3 trucks each time plus run an air blower and rattle gun for changing tires. My tires are 33s.
Churchurdan, any pics of where the oil port is on your mates mu?
Don't forget that the compressors are often 20 years old so can fail quickly.

Re: ac as air compressor?
Use proper compressor oil rather than engine oil or CRC. Mixes better in air and will also lub your air tools better. Cheap as from Supercreep. I used a Hiace master cylinder as an oil resevoir & a 1mm oil line into the suc side of pump. Works sweet as. don't worry about collecting the oil again as it is minimal. Put some new tyres on a couple of weeks back. No sign of oil in the tyres
Re: ac as air compressor?
i use a endless air brand compressor pump switch at 110psi
works real good

Looks like a Sanden air con pump modified. to me. Just what I have sitting on the bench.

Ok people, move along. Nothing to see here. Thank you, move along.

Re: ac as air compressor?
have not long finnished a install on my disco.
i had a rear chinese locker that came with loom , switchs and pressure valve.
so split that all up and ran the power to the little 12v pump to the air con clutch
air is drawn from the air box so it is filtered and shouldnt get wet
put a inline oiler infront of the pump and a water/oil trap after it.
used a 2.5kg fire ex bottle and my brother made me a little alloy block for the 2 locker switchs and the pressure sensor.
works great. also great to have both lockers in
