what have i done? srs light stays on

Post by fish »

Hi all, i had a rattle that was driving me insane that could only be gotten to by removing the glove box. so i pulled it and went for a drive to locate it and solved it. i noticed the srs light on when the glove box was out and realized that there were two plugs that complete a circut of some sort to diable the air bag when broken. i thought it would return to normal when i put the box back in but no........... how do i remedy this?

Just a guess but have you tried disconnecting the batteries to clear the fault? Just a guess mind you

You need a scan tool to plug into the obd16 port and pull out the error codes , If it says open circuit on passengers squab or similar may pay to re solder the pins in the yellow plugs that you un clipped , There is a possibility it just has a temporary diagnostic code , Disconnecting the battery is not likely to reset srs codes only engine ecu codes ,

Depending on the type of ecu the Mitsubishi runs whether this'll work or not.

Disconnect both battery terminals, leave it ten minutes, then hold the 2 terminals together for 10 seconds or so. This will discharge the capacitors in the ecu (if it has any) and can delete all stored codes.

Then reconnect the battery as normal.

Worth a shot before you spend any money.

Works on lots of European stuff (audi, VW, Mercedes, ScaNia etc)

Cheers

Doing the discharge wont damage the ecu either way, as the battery is disconnected, so its only residual current that you are getting rid of.
Ive done it on Audi q7's etc and at over $6000 for replacement ecu its not something thats not tried and tested!!
May not work though..... but wont do any damage :-)

Ah bugger,

Like I said it doesn't always work, but worth a go I guess....

Any local auto electrician will be able to plug it in, or repco sell them code readers cheap as chips. Probably cheaper than an hours labour at the sparkys!

The light is on due to a fault, possibly because you disturbed the circuit when the key was on. Because SRS is a major safety issue, they usually stay on permanently until checked out and reset. You will need a computer to reset.
SRS light on is a WoF failure.
