Removing a disc rotor - help

Post by 00falcon »

Hey guys...

am after any tips for removing a Disc rotor...

I have a stripped wheel stud that i need to replace, but in order to do that, i have to remove the Disc Rotor.

After removing the caliper, i have sprayed in the stud holes with penetrating oil, left it over night, and then beat on the Rotator Hat (if thats what you call it) and it hasn't budged one bit...

And just now, i used bottle jack from the frame to the disc, to apply outward pressure while beating it with an even bigger hammer.

Still no movement.

What tricks are there that will help me get it off...?

I don't think the rotor has ever been off, as it had the factor retaining clips still in place...
so, i need to break 14 years of rust...

Help...

p.s. my rotors don't have the threaded hole in them that you screw a bolt into to push them off... :(

Have you got access to heat? Front or rear?

I'm not a Jeep man, But maybe a little heat with a oxy torch may help.

Front...

Unfortunately i don't have access to heat...

but as i understood it, you aren't meant to apply heat, as you will warp the rotor...

If i did have access to heat....
where exactly would i apply heat...?

It is not the Disc Rotor that you heat, it is the inner part where it is stuck on the hub body.
Heat is OK , just don't over do it, just keep the heat even and not in one place to long.

3 or 5 lb club hammer at 180 degrees apart around the rotor edge from the front and then back. Keep at it. Worst case is you will have to put new rotors in. There is nothing that hold them in place other than the rim and lug nuts.

I found tapping around the hat towards the centre of the hub worked best on the old mans xj,
just like unseating a balljoint I held a sledge against the opposite side whilst I tapped around
problems are only a problem if you not willing to learn how to find solutions

This is probably the second to final step I'd take before taking to it with a 5" grinder.
Warning. You may well snap your rotor in half using this Technique

So have a replacement set ready durr.

Overnight soak with a good pentrant i.e wurth roost off blue ice.

Find yourself a decent set of pulley pullers (Hydraulic if poss) these come up to about 7 ton for a screw version (rattle gun make it even better) and more if hydraulic, crank it up (if replacing rotor I'd just keep going as much as possible without damage to center hub)

If you're replacing studs anyways pulley pullers will do your hub as well.

You can throw in heat as well but you risk heat soaking your hub and cooking your bearing.

If you do it's gotta be lots of heat fast i.e oxy acet torch to heat the rotor hub before too much heat transfers to the hub. (be prepared to cool it off fast if you think you've put too much heat in)

Start beating rotor with club hammer from the side and back to shift it and brake the rust adhesion while the pulley puller maintains pressure.

You can apply these techniques to getting pay rises at work, extracting blood from a stone, making a politician pay for what everyone else pays for and pulling the wallet out of "that mates" pocket when it his turn to pay.

Otherwise pay the money and get someone else to do it!

Cheers guys.

Well, it has been soaking over night in a home made penetrating oil
50% ATF / 50% Acetone
http://www.homemadetools.net/forum/home ... ng-oil-159

tonight, i will go home, and beat teh F*&k out of it... with outward pressure from the bottle jack... again...

But, im now worried about damaging the unit bearing...

I have put the call out for the cost of a replacement rotor.

i don't want to pay for someone to do it... as i wont learn anything that way...

but... the wife wants her garage back...
