I have a 1992 2.8 hilux with 260,000km which has cracked its head and the bore is scoured, i took it to my local garage and they quoted me $7000 with a 20,000km warranty to rebuild it which seems bloody deer. I have weight up options of selling it and buying another truck but with the 8 or 9 thousand I would have I probley won't be any better off in the long run. Where is the best place to buy reco engines or new ones and what sort of price am I looking at roughly? I have been looking at a couple on trademe how do I no wether I want a long or short block? Thanks in advance

long block = everything connected to engine.. = alternator, power steering, etc etc inlets etc

Short block = Just block nothing else.. so if your engine has good alternators etc then a short block is cheaper.. just means more time removing and re installing them onto the new short block. Im 99.9% sure that's how it is..

A short block is usually just the block part of the engine, with crankshaft and pistons. This is good if you have a good head and all the other parts.

A long block also includes a cylinder head but neither includes bolt ons eg manifolds, alternator etc. You want the long block option and swap your other bits over from the other engine.

Make sure the warranty provided by the reconditioner/seller is not void if you do a self install (if that's what you're intending to do).

Has anyone had experience with these guys? Thinking about ordering one and getting a mate to give me a hand to put it in.

Hey mate those guys are great to deal with. They installed a 1kz in my ln107 then I had them put a top mount inter cooler, 3" dump pipe, kinugawa fast spool turbo and about to have a manual fuel pump fitted. It's been over three years as I could afford each stage. Highly recommend Hayden and John for quality workmanship at good rates as they have a full machine shop to do all the work in house.
