350 Chevy in my 40 series mud truck.....................
Ok so after farting around with used Safari rads, pipes and mounting the rad too low giving me endless air locks and over heating since November the following has happened.(and im so ok with it)
New 3 core alloy rad and custom 15mm deep alloy fan shroud, new 16 " fan, new electric Davies pump and the rad mounted high up behind my seat I have gone form a kettle to a chilly bin.
Using a digital laser thermo pointer I get 47 deg out of the engine and into the top of the rad and wait for it.............27 deg out the bottom of the rad with the fan running permanently. That is just crazy as to how efficient the rad and fan etc is. 45 mins of idling and reving still didn't activate the thermo fan which is set at 87 deg. I then over rid the thermo and set the fans to run all the time and it dropped the temp down to 42 deg on the gauge and 47deg at the top hose coming out the engine.
Im certainly not complaining and now only need to install a thermo stat to warm it up a bit. Crazy stuff and just wanted to share that!

Re: 350 Chevy in my 40 series mud truck.....................
not really sure how accurate your digital thermometer is but that's way too low temp you need the engine to get up to operating temp to run properly, around 180F (82C) in the heads

Re: 350 Chevy in my 40 series mud truck.....................
True test would be when engine is under load. Idling it won't give you much stress. Find a good size hill and run up with foot planted. Then see what happens with the cooling system.

Yeah oil won't be working right if it doesn't warm up a bit!
But, 47 out of the engine, is your thermostat stuck open?
Even if you have the worlds best radiator your thermostat should still let the engine run at the correct temperature. radiators do not set the engine temp. Thermostats do. The only time a radiator will set the temp is if it's not correct for the job, in which case it's more likely to over heat than over cool

Re: 350 Chevy in my 40 series mud truck.....................
Appreciate all the comments. I really checked and checked again with my multimeter temp sensor and got the same with in 1 degree so it really was that cool. Currently I have a gutted thermo just to give it some flow resistance but am buying a new thermostat tomorrow and will get the correct temp for the Chevy so the oil and water is correct.
Just so happy that after so many over heating trips with the old set up it looks like I will only worry about running out of gas and not overheat. I am testing it on a farm near Te Kuiti this week end and have bucket loads of hills to keep going up and down on to see what it does.

Good stuff - its such a good feeling when you have been putting up with something (Especially something as important as cooling) to finally have a fix aye.
Post some photo's from testing at the farm please

Yep your system works. Pretty much identical to what im running. Set your fans to seventy degrees. Leave the thermo alone as once she is working you will know engine temp by fans cycling on and off. CD fans draw shit loads of current so a minimum of 40 amp relay and big power and earth cables.
Its better to pull the air through the rad then push as well.
What cooling are you doing for the trans and power steering??

Oh good thanks! I actually did set my fans to come on at 75 deg last night and they cycled in and out while idling for over 40 mins again so its running really well for this part, bought a new thermostat today so will fit this tonight.
I have a 1000amp battery, uprated alternator, heavy wires both sides and yes a nice heavy duty relay. Im running a new single 16" fan but bought 2 just in case I decided to add another so would have a spare to add on for summer etc if needed......were too cheap to not buy a spare!
Mannnn it justs too good and runs so well and will be trying out on a friend's sheep farm new Te Kuiti tomorrow. So hopefully all I have to worry about from now on is running out of gas and not numbers on the temp gauge.........................
I fitted the custom rad shroud last night too and it looks and runs mint

Ok so 2 hours of constant idling (during lunch stop) long hill climbs and stuck on bogs saw the temp sit at 82deg! Fan kicks in and out on the thermo setting of 80 deg, no leaks and the V8 booggied up to 5000rpm like a dream. Absolutely perfect running conditions now, timing reset and mixture leaned out a bit too due to hard starting when hot. Even fitted 1,5" carb spacer but still battles to start and then blows black smoke but getting this sorted properly by carby guy next week.

No point in doing that cause the wheels are covered so the only way to cover it that much is for some retard to take hand fulls and throw it on there on purpose..............?
or I could have left it in the front like so many other and then yes it would get hot for sure.

Trade Me trader "maxspeed888" , $320. Had a few friends buy from him and they have had no issues with the product at all. No name brand visible on the rad which is not an issue. Sorry for late rely.

Yep yep yep
Only issues we had was on long hard runs and was due to lack of airflow cayse rad was blocked by the tub in front. In the bush it works well

Sounds right, road cars work opp. to bush trucks with rear mounts. Mine sits behind my head/shoulders so when driving the wind blows straight in and cools the rad on open track driving. Fan doesn't even kick in then haha. So much heat dissipation being up high and open top. Will be doing the heavy heavy test this week end at my club grounds in Ngaroma for a scout trip week end. Should be good fun.
Re: 350 Chevy in my 40 series mud truck.....................
Any recommendations on who could tune my 350 chev with a Holley 600 carb on it? On the north shore.
Re: 350 Chevy in my 40 series mud truck.....................
Theres a rebuilder on Hillside rd from memory who sorted my chev v6 hilux tune out. He might be able to help or at least know someone who will.
North shore engine reconditioners 6 hillside. 4447179
