Rust..... will be somewhere between the front bumper and spare wheel holder
But more specifically under seats, firewall and sun roof, roof gutters. Apart from that they are mostly pretty tough. Any diesel will need a good service history especially turbo ones. Continuous heavy towing takes a bit of a toll on the highest gear (5th).

The 4.2 by FAR ---- How ever only if it is turbo'd.
Do not even try towing with a N/A TD42 unless its an empty trailer.

I've owned both, TD42 and TD42+T. The +T Shits on the N/A.

Also go the LWB for towing over the shorty.

hi I am on my 4th swb and all but one were turbo;d, the one that was n/a td42 still went ok , towing the boat still did it all right just the hills got me down to 3rd, if it was a big hill then mabe 2nd, if you keep it up in the 3000rpm you will go every where. ps if you get a n/a then just get a turbo put in it. :D

Woh woh woh.......not 100% true.
4.2 is way better. Yes
Turbo is better. Yes.....but.....not necessary, I have n/a 4.2 and can tow another lwb 4.2 on a big trailer. Not the fastest in the world but sits quite happily at 90-100k on the main roads bit slow up hills but very comfortable towing heavy loads.

How much would you expect to pay to turbo a 4.2 engine?
are the 2.8s rubbish?

2.8 are strong, bit of iffy injection pump but main fault is just low power.
with decent injection pump and turbo would it make reasonable power.

turbo 4.2, depends on if its factory or not.
factory turbo 4.2 is the strongest engine then silver top NA and then black top NA. there a list of the differences on patrol forum.
blacktop only handle light turbo.

what you pay depends on if its factory turbo or aftermarket turbo on which particular engine. for a real top end setup expect to pay a huge amount more.

Pffft!! .

To the op...a n/a TD42 will tow just fine, plenty of low down torque and don't try to treat it as a speed machine. I spent 5 years towing tandem trailers with premix and building materials around the hills of Akaroa and Banks Peninsula with a swb n/a. As said above a LWB won't rock around as a swb with a heavy load. I found 2nd or 3rd gear and with the engine at it's optimum torque range of between 1800 and 2200rpm it will pull anything all day long without overheating or any issues.

I have seen 2.8 Safari's that overheated or didn't cope at all with the roads coming out of LeBons Bay or Okains Bay...mind you some cars or back packer vans struggled as well.
