School me on 1kz injecton issues

Never worked on or looked at a 1KZ diesel . Guy at work has a 96 prado and its not turning over very well first start of the day and dumps fuel out the pipe once it does start . It is very slow to wind and then almost stops winding over . Next turn of the key is clears and winds normally and starts .
I said it could be a leaky injector hydraulically locking and then clearing . Issue is I would expect diesel in the oil as the rings could not seal the fuel , is that correct .
he replaced the batteries and then had the starter serviced and then overhauled and the issue is still there .
So back to my leaking injector theory . Anyone had the injectors serviced/overhauled ? Do they need it in a 1KZ ? Any other ideas on the poor starting .
Cheers
Chris

The thing that first comes to mind, is there a problem with a glow plug or plugs.
This normally presents itself in the colder months...
I would get them checked first before heading off on the injector theory.
The injectors are rebuildable. There is a guy in Torbay on the forum who does them... There was a post the other day with his details.

Will follow up on the glow plugs .
It is not turning over at a speed that it could ever start , to the point it stops turning over . Once stopped , give it a few seconds , turn the key and it spins over at a normal speed and fires up as expected . Pumps raw fuel out the pipe ( apparently ) .
Let you know on the glow plugs .

also have a look at the 2 soft stop butterfly's in the intake manifold post turbo.
the larger one on my 1KZ gummed up with blowby and caused hard starting until the heat freed it up .

Glow plugs been changed , no help . Will look at what UBZ is talkling about . However I think the key to this is it does not turn over at a speed consistent with starting , once the it turns over it starts fine and will start fine when left for most of the day . It is only after a long period of time does it turn slowly again . Sometimes overnight but usually more time required .
Cheers for the ideas , will look at all of them

Is the battery being charged properly...??
Also there may be some parasitic voltage draw which is knocking the battery down a bit...Is the battery big enough? NS70L
Also check all the power feeds to the starter, battery terminals and earth wires.

Being a 1KZ and with the description you have given I would be thinking more along the lines of coolant entering the cylinders. After sitting over night remove glow plugs and wined over on the starter looking to see what fluid if any gets blown out . Another thing to check ---- has there been work done in the engine bay and someone left an earth strap off, this will cause slow cranking. My 96 Prado is only fitted with the one battery and even with battery new and on a real cold day it's slow cranking or should I say slower than my twin battery set up that was in my Surf. It's all about capacity v compression, add a bit of liquid and the compression skyrockets.
FITZY.

Dual battery's , both new and big ( much bigger than the N70 that turns my disco over just fine

) . Voltage is good , so assume there are charging ok .
Checked all leads on the engine , all clean and tight , both Pos and Neg .
Did not consider coolant

, after he stated all the unburnt fuel when its starts . But that fits with what I think , will go and look at the level etc now and check it out . Going to try and get it left at work so I can look at it tomorrow morning , would be best time to pop out the glow plugs . However as this has been going on for 6 odd months , he has not cooked it yet nor complained its using water . If water can get into the cylinder , compression must get out into the water and I would expect this to empty the radiator rather quickly .

Mine used to start like a bag full of marbles when the head cracked....
Till all the water cleared. Especially after a hot run....
Confirmed the head crack when little bubbles of exhaust gas was coming out of the radiator when the cap was removed..

I had this with mine and it was the head cracked (13 cracks). Might be something else as I then had steam like a loco coming out the exhaust when I went down the road and radiator kept drinking. But the turning over problem is exactly what I had as well.

yea if you crank till it stops then leave it for a min or two then it cranks fine it can't be battery related. They don't charge themselves!

Check the earth cable on the back of the head is tight.
