so it looks like we are downscaling the pajero to an sj,
and me an the mate are looking at reliability of the factory engine and gearbox.
sj will be bush truck only trailered around.
my thoughts are a cd20 an auto from an avenir,
but I would also look at a manual if I could find a cable shift option from a fwd car.
perhaps you chaps have some ideas

that's a consideration but would prefer diesel,
to keep running cost down,
to possibly turbo,
to perhaps have a taller ratio in the gearbox,
also the simplicity and wading capability

Citroen/Peugeot XUD9 intercooled turbo as fitted to anything diesel pre 2000. No computer, top mount ic, incredibly basic, cheap as chips an bulletproof. Very cheap to run as well...that motor was also fitted to the diesel suzuki 4x4s in rwd config.

Sorry they are the 1.9 diesel, not the HDi one. The 1.9 is also a cast block/alloy head later HDis are alloy block with liners...

that'd be an option along with a camry 2ct or 3ct,
cheap but reliable would be a bonus

X2 for the Poogeot motors. Also found under the bonnet of Rover 200/400s. Bizarrely called a 218 SLd instead of 219!

Also consider the VW range of Tdi motors. Get one from crashed Golf and you might even get a PDK box. Lots of power from them.

The samurai I have with a 2ct went mean the few times I've driven it. (Too many projects, not enough time). More than a lot of torque for something that light. Runs a t50 gearbox i think.

Other thing you may want to consider is weight...the XUD9TE is 140kg, and the BE gearbag is 37, 177kg all up. Not sure re the yotamota. The 3C is also quute a wide motor and may not fit your situation...
