Need tyres for my 90 Surf, but so many to choose from???
I want a tyre that kicks ass in all off-road conditions but is street legal. Dont really care about the on road performance tooooo much but gotta be safe. Standard suspension with 15" wheels.
Any thoughts?? BFG?? Pirelli?? Simex?? Maxxim??

To tell you the truth I reckon Pirelli are the best allround tyre I have used to date. About to try the Goodyear Wrangler Mtr with my new vehicle, but would never buy a set of BFG's ever again, no matter how cheap.

I think you would one of very few who think that way Al.
Pirreli are very soft compound as a rule because they are designed for running on smooth concrete freeways and autobahns, and not our rough as guts chipseal. Hence they will hang on really good, but life expectancy is crap. Goodyear MTR's seem to be a good deal, harder compound, good pricing, and the ones I have seen seem to go real good in all conditions.
BFG,s are real good, but fairly pricey, Last set i had were 33's mud terrains on a 60 series cruiser, got 94 000 kms out of them before they failed a WOF.
Plenty of choice around for tyres now, so do your homework and make your choice.
My pick would be to stay away from all terrain type tyres, and look at the mud terrain types. They will stand you in good stead with club trips and are not too ugly so as too rip everything to bits.
Doesn't really matter what you buy, in 1 year or less they will be too small

.
I started on 31''s about 10 years ago, then went 32's, then 33's,too 35's all in mud terrains and then onto 36" swampers, and have just bought some 39.5" swampers. Only ever worn 2 sets out
Good luck.

I was talkng in terms of all round offroad abilty in my experience Wasn't taking onroad use and life expectency into account.

Thanks for that ,guys. Good feedback. Can you tell me what the maximum size I can fit on my current setup is? And why does bigger diameter make such a difference other than gearing?

very good on the road with low road noise, should wear ok. tend to clog in mud, have more grip than mtrs in the mud, dont clear as well as a bfg or pirelli scorpian, and are quite expensive, about $370 per tyre for 33"
people that run them are usually happy with them.

thats a very interesting statement, ive tried about 30 sets of tyres in the lastr 5 years and i would rate the bfg mud terrain km as the best ive tried, good in the mud great on the road, i would suggest running tubes in them though as they get dirt in the beads and slow leak. '
i suppose it depends on the conditions, in southland you dont get much rock to play on, its all mud, bush tracks and farms. i fitted my simexes on the last trip and it made my day so easy, and i got to tow about 10 trucks. shame they are so awful on the road.

I've been very happy with my MTR's. Really good on firm surfaces, clog a little in the mud but no worse than any other radial. If you can spin them up they clear OK. I reckon they're at least as good (or better) than BFG or Coopers, and heaps cheaper
