Took a few trucks for a trip last night and on the way out after towing trucks out and getting stuck itself my mates 80 series lost its forward gears but still had reverse.

Now for the details, its a 1993 80 series Vx Landcruiser Petrol Automatic and has only done under 400ks after having a reconditioned gearbox put in it, that didn't come with a warrrentee (I Know it wasn't very smart). He had just towed out a truck and we carried on down the track 100 metres or so when it just stopped going forward.

So what im asking is what should we look at or is the trans stuffed

check the front diff as if he was recovery hard in reverse he may of shat the c/w or pinion, check by removing front d/s.
if still nogo then try low box and moving thro the gears if still nogo then autos toast.
they are pretty strong boxes so personally i would be taking it back to reco guy and asking why is there no warranty, unless there has been some form of "just do a little rebuild"type of deal. then its bugger

The auto should be an A440F... You may want to check the basics first like the linkages are still in the correct position... I have had mine move and it wouldn't select forwards gears but managed to latch into rev Note I run the little brother A340E...
Try and find a manual online for the A440F and read thru the diagnostic section... Could be something simple...

I just talked to my mate he said it had an A442f trans in it, is that very different to the A440f

If you've still got reverse then it's still got line pressure.
If it was only one gear then you'd have a single cooked set of bands or an individual crook solenoid. should still get 1st second

Since all forward gears have gone I'd say it is the selector on the side of the box....anything stuck in it? sticks caked mud broken cable etc.

The manual I posted covers the A442F also... pretty similar

last trans I cooked same thing happened ,, no forward just reverse , mine is a jeep but yota trans ....whats trans oil look like ..

trans oil is still like new

so what did you find

Heading up to his in the next couple of days to have a look at it for him beore he takes it to the garage

Gidday - If the auto is toast, I've got an A440F sitting on my garage floor that i've been meaning to list on Trademe - It's only done 127 k's too.
