Well,
Thought I would start a build thread as I will likely be needing plenty of guidence along the way!
Started off with a bone stock 1990 nissan patrol. Its an aussie import powered by a carberated rb30 engine. I made the call for petrol due to the minimal usage and didnt plan on the build getting as in depth as im now looking (how all good projects start)
So my initial plans wee;
*33" mud tyres
*bull bar
*small lift
*winch
I made a trip to the west coast with all but the winch, and quickly decided I need MORE! (Pics to come soon)
So first issue I found. Being carbie they dont like steep hills...... stall and make it a mission to get back on flat ground to start (2 hours hand winching a dead truck up a steep ass hill will teach ya quick)
So now I am planning to get EFI running gear from an old vl commodore or R31 skyline that are RB30 injected SOHC engines.
From there, my list has grown to consist of;
*12000 lb winch
*auto locker front and rear
*2" body lift
*long travel shocks (already have 2" suspension lift)
*possibly look at space to run 35" tyres when my new 33"s need replacing
Rock sliders and wrap around bars
Peoples thoughts?am I going in the right direction?

I'd be looking at a 25det rather than throwing efi on the single cam motor
Your going to need cert for the efi anyway and it'd give you a lot better power especially if you're gonna look at 35s down the track

I like the torque (and cost) of rb30 and was looking into a super charger if need be

Re: gas guzzler patrol build
You wont need body lift for 33", could just about fit 35' with a bit of guard trimming. Wouldn't worry to much about the rear auto locker either at this stage. Just try the front one only for a while. Thats all i had in mine
Growing old is compulsory, growing up is optional

Yeah running 33s now, you reckon I will get 35s on a 2" suspension and gaurd trimming?

Re: gas guzzler patrol build
Put an Rb25de head on the rb30 block and fit a turbo, they are a really good combo for torque.
Re: gas guzzler patrol build
get a air locker in the front, to make it drive like a reasonable truck. while on road
89 safari, pto winch, 33x15 simexs. sliders,75mm lift . turbo intercoolered

Air locker up front for on road ..??? Now that doesn't make sense!
Did you mean off road by any chance?
Re: gas guzzler patrol build
I would agree with the above, if you going to the trouble of injecting it, get a whole rb25 setup with the head and whack that on the rb30 block. Will eat an rb30e easy even in non-turbo form and could probably be had fairly cheap from the likes of an old 25SE cefiro or gts25 skyline etc. Most of the old rb30e skylines and vls will be starting to get a bit old and temperamental now mine had numerouslittle problems. Got to remember the 30 is still a fairly light duty engine for pushing a near 2.5ton truck along haha. Only Aussie gets the small engine patrols for some reason

Re: gas guzzler patrol build
Has anyone put a 25de head on? would it be much harder to do as opposed to the standard 30e head?
I can see the merit of the DE head (without turbo) but I assume I would then need to chip and tune my ECU as opposed to being able to run a 30e ecu

Re: gas guzzler patrol build
An early 25de head will bolt straight on, the later vvt 25de head requires a mod to the front corner of the block. You have to drill and tap a hole in the front of the block to move a cam belt tensioner as the 30 block is taller and requires a longer belt, from memory it is a cam belt for a mazda RF diesel that is the correct one.
Use the wiring and ecu from the vehicle the head came off and it will be an easy wire up. the factory ecu will be fine with out a turbo but if you do turbo it they are easily re-chipped and tuned.
An rb30det wil do an easy 400hp with stock internals and the right bolt on gear.
