Im currently fitting up the new axle bearings ready to reassemble my diff. After finishing off one bearing assembly i noticed there is still alot of slop in the bearing :? with the axle standing upright on the wheel studs i can move the backing plate a considerable amount. I followed the nissan workshop manual to the letter and double checked everything but this doesnt seem correct? surely with brand new bearings and everything all correctly seated and torqued there should be very minimal play right? any help would be appreciated i dont want to throw it all back together to have the bearings fail in a month.

drum brake , they are definitely the correct bearings they were measured up and matched to the old ones.

See the axle end is shiney? It pushes through to a spacer block in centre of diff, which has other axle pushing back. This gives bearing preload (you fitted a taper bearing, yeah?), Did you notice the metal shim gaskets when you removed? These may need to be adjusted to get preload adjusted. Read on further in manual, it'll show you the procedure :-)

I did wonder if that was the case and yes i did notice the shims and i did read the manual completely , it tells you how to measure the axle end play and adjust using those shims it just never stated that this was how the bearing preload was achieved. thanks for your post though i feel much better now haha 8)
