Early Rangie - drive train problem

I wonder if anyone can shed light on my problem. THis last week if I make a slow sharp (maybe full lock) right hand turn, i.e doing a u turn or pulling out of a sharp driveway, my Rangie feels like someting binds up and then lets go with a rather loudish bang/clang noise.

Centre diff is not engaged and other than that it drives fine on the road and around normal corners.

Looking underneath the vehicle nothing seems amiss.

Can anyone suggest where i should look first, has anyone else had a similar problem??

Where do you get these autolockers for Rovers

Id pull the front end apart and have a look before something bad goes. Could be some broken crownwheel teeth in the oil?

No, no autolocker. Yes I'm guessing the front diff or a CV probably the left one. But any ideas of what to check first would be good.

REal prick really I'm not in the mood for serious repairs, but as you say better do it now rather than when it gets worse!

Ok, found the problem, with the front driveshaft removed I tried driving with the centre diff lock in, no problems, tried to disengage the centre diff and the light went out, but, it still drove. So the centre diff is not disengaging properly. That’s the problem.

Now I have to try to fix it!!

Thanks

The spiders can weld themselves to the spider pins if too much wheel spinning with the C/D open
I have fitted a 5 port air valve to a RR to get away from the poor OE switch. A 3 port won't dump and will hold the diff in.
The Air Valve gave the most positive engagement I have seen in a Fido

Well for anyone who is interested...the problem was indeed the centre diff. Did a check on saturday morning, started at the vaccum pipes, to the diff lock actuator and worked back until the only thing left was the diff. So, pulled it out (an relativly easy job on a rangie) and found little bits missing from the gears inside. (found lots of treasure in the oil when I drained it to remove the centre diff - a sure sign something had been having a chew in there).

Replaced the diff with the spare I had, put it all back together and replaced the oil, and now its all working well!!
