ok pulled starter apart to check brushes..... they are fine....... pulled it completely apart and so far ive found 5 out of 6 bearings are bindin up or half rooted, the amount of rust water and corrosion is insane. so now washin everything and attakin it wit the wire brush. soleniod plunger was almost completely seized. fun nite planned cleanin it

Had two problems with starters.
One simply solved by replacing corroded relay (after buying new starter). (old 40 series cruiser 2F)
Other couldn't fix. With similar symptoms engine manual said it was the magnetic throw switch, which is a throw away part. I tried brushes, cleaning everything, greasing everything...nothing. Eventually found original old one lying round. (70 series 3F)
Best place to get elec parts I have found is a Appco, Battersea St, Sydenham. Got new starter and alternator for 2F for about $100 each...after quote of $600 to recond starter...
Cheers

I got the $600 quote from auto elec place on Durham St sth - probably wont go back there...Over many years I have found the best place for getting honest answers and great knowledge is top end of Colombo St, same block as After Hours medical centre (I think), cnr of either Purchas St, or Canon -it s small rd across to Caledonian Rd. Wee pokey place, but great for starters and alternators.
