hey guys some safari service q's

hey guys just new here, bought myself a swb 91 safari 4.2 manual etc anyway i've got a few q's for ya's as this is my first suv/deisel

ok how many litres does the safari take for an oil change and what would you's recommend for oil?

any other thoguhts on what i should do for a service i was thinking all diff gearbox oils, what should i use?

also injector cleaners?

it runs pretty sweet starts sweet and blows near to no smoke done 198k

but i was going up huntsbry hill in chch onthe road the first day i got it and it seemed to struggle in third up the hill which i thought a 4.2 should just cruise up it?

also it seems to walk around a bit on the open road it didn't even feel safe to go over 90km!!! now i did notice that the steering damper was leaking a bit so i will endevor to replace soon, but maybe a good wheel alignment?

oh it also has a set of 33 inch tyres on it too, ill put a post in the new members bit also

its about 12 litres of engine oil,
and with 33's you want about 36 odd psi in the tyres to restrain the wandering, but with tyres that size its prolly gunna wander anyway

Yes replace your steering damper, did it on ours and it made a world of difference. Also check all panhard and radius arm bushes as if they are worn they can also cause a bit of wandering. Does it still have the factory sway bars on?? If they have been removed expect your on road handling not to be that good.

10.5 litres of oil, 2 oil filters i use penzoil from appco, comes in a 20 litre drum, costs about $90. yep check all diffs, transfer case and gearbox oils if not clean replace. use lsd oil in the diffs.
clean or replace air filter while you are at it.

if its wandering check for worn bushes or wheel bearings.

i replaced my steering arm or drag link on my saffy and it cured most of the wandering, also check tyre pressures are even.

I use C4 Vannelus in mine, TD42's are very particular on oil, premature rocker shaft wear can result if you use an oil they don't like, there was a very good write up on oils for them on an aussie site, if I can find it I will post. If its wandering also check the panhard rod bushes as these can wear. I wouldn't bother with any sort of injector cleaners, there's only one way to do them properly.

Heres the list,

On the yahoo based Patrol forum, there has been plenty of talk about oils for the TD42. Nissan Japan require a minimum spec of 3000 PPM of Calcium based detergent for the engine which gives you the options of:

BP - Vanellus C4 global.
Caltex - Dela CJX.
Castrol - J-Max.
Penrite - HPR Diesel 15.
Shell - Rimula X.

LSD oil in the rear diff 5 Litres approx

80w 90 in the front 6.5 Litres approx

80w 90 in the Transfercase 2 Litres approx

75m 90 in the Gearbox 5Litres approx

With 33's I would imagine its had a suspension lift. A result of a suspension lift is that the caster angle is no longer correct leading it to wander all over the road following the contour and camber as it changes. Get the wheel alignemnet checked, but i would imagine the caster angle is out as a result of the lift. This cannnot be corrected through adjustment, you need aftermarket caster correction bushes or plates. Realtivly cheap to do.

Also check the bushes on the rear left hand side lower control arm, if its had any kind of suspension lift, the bush at the diff end of the arm takes a hammering and it can cause the vehicle to try to change direction as you get on and off the gas as well as wander all over the place.

ok right so went out and spent a bit of bling today got some castrol rx engine oil new filters, unifilter, new steering dampner, pumped the tyres up they were on about 33psi guna get a wheel alingment and wheels balanced on monday, but oh how am i going to find the time to do it before sunday lunch i don't know as i work tonight and tomorrow night 12hours night shift yayay!!!!!

Don't be surprised if you find that performance is not quite what you expect as the naturally aspirated 4.2 tends to run out of steam quite quickly. You get used to changing down a gear and just going slow and steady.

The up side is that with such an under stressed motor they go forever if looked after. A number in Australia with mileages in excess of 500k without anything other than running maintenance.

Of course if your keen for more performance there is always the turbo option.

morn guys just woke up managed to sneak an oil change in while working last night runs a lot smoother and the most important thing i finally have a steady oil pressure yaya

With the factory locker in the rear, what grade diff oil would I use. I am only used to LSd's and open diffs. I am assuming it would be the same as for an open. Also what do dudes think about adding those desiel cleaners/fuel additives to their desiels?

80W90 still with the factory locker.

Injector cleaner is not really going to fix smoke(if thats your problem), there is only onbe fix for that. New Injectors. The TD42 is a pretty smokey sort of an engine anyway, the injection system is very old but simple and reliable technology. It will smoke even with new injectors, and especially if it has had any kind of tweaking for a small power gain.

The Moreys additive is a good biocide additive to keep Diesel bug at bay, I use that, and so do a lot of others I know. Claims to be good for the pump and injectors as well :roll:

Badly worn rockers and shafts can cause TD42s to smoke
As can the restrictive factory exhaust

how do you tell if you have a worn rocker shaft? rattly tappets? would the cam wear as well.. how many kms should the valve gear do before they need work?

The cams don't seem to wear. How well it has been serviced relates directly to how long the engine componants last. Remove the tappet cover and put the rocker on the back of the cam, then check for play.
They will go for a long time, just adjust the clearances

i have adjusted the tappets 3 times in the last 15 000kms, they loosen up, that would indicate rocker shaft wear?

Sure would.

I have had my rocker shaft replaced and rockers resurfaced and haven't had to adjust them since.

Shaft is about $270.

As above also, I replaced the shaft, must be common as Nissan NZ have 180 of the things in stock, and had the rockers refaced, set the clearances to 12 thou and havn't touched them since.

how many kms have your vehicles travelled? mine has a aftermarket safari turbo and has travelled 240 000kms

It is a common occurence, and its related to the post earlier about using the correct spec oil.

Mines done 170,000 (so more like 270,000 :roll: )
