I have a 1975 FJ40 and I need to rebuild the front axle but I'm having trouble finding a kit for it. How much different is the '79 on axle?
I'm dreading having to get another later axle for parts availability as I have just done a cut and turn and sua conversion to the case

Have you got a disk front end on your cruiser?
If so I believe the entire swivel housing kit is the same as a solid axle Hilux. If it's not all the same, certainly there is a lot of cross over.
Some one on here will know better than me though.
Good luck.

It's got drums, 30 spline outers, small steering arms and warn locking hubs. All the things I can find on the web seem to contradict themselves.

which specific rebuild parts are you looking at, wheel bearings and swivel kit?
those warn hubs are fawking awful they come loose and flog out the dowel holes and then keep coming loose until they fly apart or fly off

I need a complete set of bits. kingpin bearing, wheel bearing, seals and cv's.
I suppose I should be thinking of decent cv's as I'm going to be running with 35's.
I would like to ditch the free hubs for a fixed flange too

Hi, I can help with axles, CV's and Drive Flanges.
Also thinking that if you are going to run 35" probably want to upgrade brakes to discs.
Cheers

Aha! And then you will be using hilux bits from the axle housing out and all you will need is a hilux knuckle kit.

Well after all I got a late model front axle with disk brakes and cut and welded that instead, it had good bearings, kingpins and aisin hubs.
It is getting converted to power rack and pinion steering too
