R50 Starting trouble

Hi. I'm having trouble starting my truck, cold or warm. When turning the key to start nothing happens, turn off then back to start again, starts fine. Had sparky check starter, said it was a bit grumbly but ok, had low voltage so put in a relay, no difference. Was told to try starting in Neutral, just the same. Any ideas or answers would be great. Thanks

Auto or Manual?

If auto, could be a faulty inhibitor switch on the transmission

Sorry, its Auto. Thanks Jay, where is it and is it easy enough to replace? Peter

Hey Peter,

I believe its located on the side of the transmission for an R50, where the linkage from the gear lever connects to the side of the box.... Easy enough to replace, and if you have a volt meter, easy enough to test resistance to see if this is what is causing the problem. Bit of a google search should give you what the resistance should be when in park/neutral/drive etc - I'm pretty sure the switch is adjustable too, so may just be out of adjustment.

This shows how to adjust...

If its still the same with a relay then the key side circuit is probably okay. Sometimes you can "test" the inhibit switch when it wont start by keeping the key held to start and jiggle the shifter or (carefully) move it from P to N see if the starter springs to life then. At the end of the day tho the starter maybe just more poked than it appears, hard to tell without pulling it off and bench testing it properly. And i dont think theres much room in the bay of an R50 to go poking a screwdriver at it to try hot starting it by shorting the terminals haha..well I know in my ZD30 R50 there isnt no spare room anywhere under the bonnet

If you hear the relay click when you turn the key but it doesn't crank you have starter issues. If you don't hear a click you have ignition switch or inhibit switch problems.
I have never had a terrano inhibit switch fail but have done a few ignition switches.

Checked the inhibitor switch for adjustment, looks ok. Like you said Dan, I can hear a click when turning the key to start. When I turn it off and back to start it starts with no trouble. Thinking that maybe its just a case of replacing it and hope for the best.

Just been quoted $425+ for Hitachi starter  . Any cheaper ones that would do the trick? Truck has done 290 so not keen to spend that much.

So starting trouble fixed. Had a friend of a friend take a look at it. He wasn't convinced it was the starter either. Turns out it was the ignition barrel that was worn. After replacing it everything is good. 8) Just means have another key to add to key ring.
