Tyre pressure

Post by stu_71 »

Hi

Just put some new boots on the Prado 95. They are Maxxis MT762's in 285/75/16. Can anyone put me in the ballpark regarding tyre pressures please? I realise that I'll need to experiment whilst offroad but what should I set them to to get there (tar seal, gravel roads etc)

I was thinking 38psi all round?

Thanks for any advice...
Cheers

did you need any suspension lift to get those wheels to clear the front guard when turning?
And what rim width are you using, as i find a wider tire on a narrow rim sometimes needs more air to keep lateral stability up(on road).

Hi. I have a 2" lift. They just kiss the inner plastic wheel arch trim at the rear of the fronts. I thought about it at the shop but it's not much and if I remove the front mud guards and a bit of trimming and theyll be all good.

They are on 16x8s with zero offset.

Do you have similar vehicle and what pressure do you run please?

Thanks Callum. Ill start there.
I'm not even sure what pressures these tyres should run at hot. I might try email Maxxis to see if I get a response also.
Blake: I should add it only just touches at full lock. I'll see if I can get some photos posted for you soon

I run my 35x12.5s at 30psi on the road, used to have them higher but they started to wear more thru the middle. Also remember that when they warm up will increase 4-5psi as well. Mine hold the road a bit better too being at a lower pressure.

i have a 185 series surf, essentially the same as your prado, but i know that if i ran bigger than my current 32"s(265/75/16), the front of the front wheel would foul on the rearward part of the flare attached to the front bumper… so i was wondering how you fitted them.
I bet your truck looks pretty tough with the 285s on.(hint of 'tire envy') :)

So I've stuck in 38 psi for a start. Will see how it goes (30 sounds low to me but hey what do I know!)
Have also emailed maxxis to see if they get back to me...

Here's a couple of pics. Front right and front left. There's about 8 mm of gap between the tyre and the inner plastic trim once the mudguards are off. I'm wondering whether to trim this back.

Any advice very welcome ...

I got told a 4psi rule - inflate tyres when cold to what you think is about right. drive 5kms or more on the open rd. check pressures. should go up 4psi. if they went up more tyre is too soft and flexing so heating up. less than 4 its too hard and you aren't getting a good contact patch.
I run 33x12.5 on 7" rims, 93 prado, have to run them harder than above rule suggests (at about 38) otherwise they squirm around a bit on the road.
