IFS Surf/Hilux Steering Box Query

Ok, the power steering box in the Bitsalux is leaking quite badly at the input shaft. It's been weeping for ages, but now it's pissing fluid so time to do something about it...
It is an LN130 Surf box, but quite an old one (1990ish). From doing a bit of research, I see that Toyota changed their part numbers for the steering box and pitman arm around August 1991.

The box that I have is identical to all of the ones on trade me that I've seen, however the front valve body (where the hydraulic lines attach) is different. The other ones taper in where as mine doesn't. Does anyone have any experience with both of these steering boxes and are they a direct swap or not? I know they both mount up the same to the chassis.

Here's a couple of pictures showing what I'm on about. The top picture is the box that I have, and the bottom one is a photo of the more common boxes that I've seen around.

Also, If someone is willing to sell a Surf or IFS Hilux steering box or knows of a good rebuild place around manawatu, then I'll be interested to hear.

My LN106 (solid axle hilux) steering box has started weeping, an auto transmission shop (in Whangarei) have quoted $830 to remove, recondition (new seals etc) and replace the steering box

I did get a seal kit for it a while ago and pulled apart a buggered box i had to get a feeling of how hard/easy it would be to do the job myself. After coming across a bearing retainer nut thing that was impossible to remove, I consulted google and it turns out is is a real dog to pull apart, so I put that idea in the too hard basket.

I'm leaning towards getting a second hand box at the moment since they very rarely give too many issues, but ideally an exchange reconditioned unit would be nice, but pricey. Then there's no question with quality etc

I will probably get my box reconditioned as any second hand unit is still going to be 25 years old and no warranty that it won't weep at some stage

Hey Bro

From memory craig set your truck up with the right amount in the slip joint to take either the long nose of the short nose steering boxes im pretty sure that was the only difference between them.

Sweet as Leigh, yea there's an adapter with a bit of ~10mm thick plate between the original steering shaft and the box input shaft. It looks like that just needs to be removed to fit the boxes with the longer snout. Worst case scenario would mean having to cut and weld up a different length one. No biggy.

This box has been puzzling me for a while now just cos there aren't many like it. Slowly getting closer to finding out all the info.
