Another Terrano Auto Trans question..

Hi All,

This may have been covered before but so far I have not found any information specific to my question.

I have a 1995 D21 2.7TD Nissan Terrano with an Automatic gearbox.

My concern is when I drive out of town with the engine still cold my Transmission stays in 4th gear Overdrive for the first few minutes, I have heard this is normal as the gearbox needs to warm up before engaging the 'lock up' function. Now after its warmed up it engages the lock up, but it keep jumping in and out of it for about 5 minutes or so ( sometimes less ). However then its fine with no problems for the rest of the trip. It only does this at the beginning of the drive. Its very annoying though because it changes the rpm from about 2250 to 2500, slowing you down then speeding you up and so on.

Hint: Tacho doesn't work and the A/T switch is in the Hold Position.

Has anyone else had this problem?

Thanks for any responses in advanced!
Cheers

My Safari does sort of the same thing.

Won't lock the TC until its warmed up.
Usually takes 5mins or so, Does it in the same spot everytime within 100m when going to town or south

I think that's normal?
but mine doesn't go in and out of lock like you're describing.

I've been doing a lot of reading into the auto trans due to all sorts of symptoms when it's cold. Pretty much all of them seem to be a result of what is known as "Morning Sickness." Basically the 20+ YO seals are weaker than they once were but they swell up again once the oil gets warmed up (meaning the trans then runs as normal) Only real way to fix it is to take everything apart and repair. However, it's not a problem and completely normal, perhaps A trans fluid change / flush is a good idea? I blew a trans hose the other night and now with the fresh fluid my symptoms seem to have lessened.

Worth a shot 8)
