I am in the process of joining up with a Christchurch 4x4wd club. The requirements for the club are front and rear recovery hooks.
Shouldn't be a problem I thought - I was wrong. The guys at the club are also a bit stumped.
Placing recovery hooks on a new generation Pajero (2000) seems to be an issue.
Is there anyone out there that can assist or advice my predicament.

I can't help with fitting them but I recall when they came out there was concern that a severe yank could twist the monocoque design, Mitsubishi said it wouldn't bend so proved it in Australia comparing it to the outgoing NL model with full chassis. There was no problem, I believe they tweaked the chassis on the older one.

When they carried out the test did they use the factory recovery points (two 'U' shapes at front) or upgraded points?
Be good to know because the club that I am joining stipulate the factory recovery hooks are not satisfactory for 8 ton strops and would bend or snap off.

The factory loops might be stronger than an aftermarket hook. Or more likely they could be weaker. But they do not have a rating which is the problem because it is not known how much force can be applied before they fail, whereas aftermarket hooks usually have a rating stamped on them so you have an idea of how strong they are.

I have been quoted $400 +gst for a local 4wd mechanic to install a certified recovery hook for the front. He informed me due to the 'crumple zone' and the air bag sensors that there is quite a lot of fabrication required - about half a days work.
Maybe I need to bite the bullet and get those that know to put it on. Just seems like a lot of money for a hook - must be an easier way.
