Automatic shifting with torque converter locked up

Post by mike »

I've just done a torque converter lockup mod and the 1km I drove with it it was quite cool and a bit different. So I can lock it in any gear apart from 1st and reverse. Mid range revs in 2nd it was nice and pulled a lot nicer than when not locked. 70km overdrive off it was brilliant, almost like the feel of a manual. What I want to know is if I lock it in 2nd and drive up to 100km/hr without nailing it, and it shifts up through the gears, and then I flick the overdrive on to sit at my cruise speed how bad is this going to be for it during the shifts? I realise it is only a small clutch but how much pressure is on this clutch and would a shift under a little bit of load cause it to slip? Thoughts?

The lock up clutch in the torque converter isn't very big and not designed to have a large load thru them. Personally I have steered away from using it at all off road. The thought of all the friction material all through the auto and being stuck in the bush puts me off.
On road at speed. I use it between gears particularly 3rd and od.

Sweet, exactly what I wanted to read. I did the lock mod mainly for the open road and a lowish cruising speed for towing.
