Hi guys,

Giving my 92 terrano a bit of a birthday, part of that is new rubber, in need of at least 2 new tyres with the other 2 not far away. Currently got all terrains.- I'm thinking I'll just get a full set of mud tyres and be done.

I would like to know what size tyre I can fit and run without any issues and using the rims I have. (Currently standard vehicle, no body or suspension lift).

Markings on current rims are- +18, 15x, 6 1/2 JJ.

Tyres are 235/75R15 190s.

What do you think my options are?

235-75r15 are a good size for daily driving and not-too-rough stuff offroad.
30x9.5r15 are the imperial equivalent, but seem to be a tiny bit taller.
The 31x10.5r15 fits (and is cheap being a common size), but on narrow rims look balloony and make it a bit less precise handling (haha like the terrano handles well anyways...)
Have you considered changing rims as well as tyres?

As above, the standard rims sort of limit you a bit. However if you can source cheap standard 15 x 7 alloy rims from a Nissan Patrol / Safari the offset is perfect for running 32 x 11.5s KL71s on standard susp (you can run up to 33 x 10.5 on standard susp). The alloys are also really light so weigh as much as 31s on steelies (bit nicer on the Steering & CVs etc.
I did do a little torsion crank and guard trimming though for when things get flexed up (only because of the extra inch width), but for most driving I could've got away without.


31 x 10.5 are probably the best way to go if you don't even wanna touch your torsion bars (although this really is a 10-20min job) but again No matter what your rims are still pretty narrow so will make these look pretty balloony.

Just trying to save a few bucks not changing rims, as I need new tyres anyway I thought I'd go with a set of muddies as I'm unlikely to get them halfway thru a set of all terrains. Vehicle is the wife's daily driver and I use it on the farm for firewood etc, camping and hunting- general hack. Probably get a car mid next year then it won't see a great deal of use. Just trying to get a bit more grip when wet and figure nows a good a time as any. Unlikely it'll be seeing any hardcore 4x4ing.

Given the situation I'm thinking a set of mud terrains on my current rims will suffice?

Ah yep, well in that case I reckon you'll probably get away just fine with 235 75 15 tyres.
The Kumho KL71s are a great tyre for these trucks too, they hardly wear at all with a good alignment & the middle block being direction makes them much quieter than your average mud tyre. They also perform surprisingly bloody well in the tuff stuff too

Another tyre option well worth looking into are the Achilles Desert Hawk XMTs. Little noisier but still barely wear.

Got a quote from Firestone today, their Bridgestone mud terrain tyre, all four fitted and balanced for 225ea, seems pretty good to me?
