carb problems

i have a fj40 82 chev v8 with a rochester 2 barrel 2gv carb on top.
problems are idles high, engine cuts out on a steep hill, smell of fuel in cab, backfires when you take your foot off the gas, uses a lot of fuel. any ideas on causes and solutions.

My chev's got a 600 holly on it, when I put the engine in my mate got me to do a return to tank line back to the fuel tank, he said the fuel pumps supply too much fuel to the carb and when they're on an angle the needle valve cant cope wth the over supply of fuel

Touch wood I've never had any flooding problems with the truck on angles so far

Go see Gary at American V8 in bridge st He did my 350 never had a problem after that
