1993 1HZ Cruiser with weird sound from clutch

There is a cosmetically mint 1HZ that I'm interested in buying. However when I was test driving it, the clutch feels a bit funny.
It's engaging properly but when I depress it to about 80%, the last 20% makes a grunting/growling sound. On the pedal it felt like it wasn't greased enough.
I did a simple google search and lots of results are saying release bearing is possibly worn out. And if I was to change it, I might as well completely replace the clutch and do a full service of the transmission since it's out.
Just wondering what are your thoughts about this issue and how much would it cost to fix?
Cheers

possibly Dual mass flywheel issue

or thrust bearing about to let go..they get crap in them and it makes a "funny noise"

then it'll fk the whole setup if not replaced

Oh? Wasn't aware that 1HZ engines were paired with dual mass? I thought they're solid flywheels? But either way I'm guessing it's not normal to have that funny noise when I fully depress the clutch.

assume whatever you want but you'll never really know what it is until you pull it apart

well couple things, no noise when not used.. everything is sweet.. clutch pressed in and things are moving.. thrust bearing is taking the load of the clutch plate.. so that would be my first guess, then clutch plate could be fked.. then spigot bearing could be fkd.. then flywheel.. or the input shaft bearings or shaft.. list goes on.. could be even the fork bent and catching on something when depressed.. could be a stone on there.. but one things for sure.. its gotta come off for a looksie

goodluck..

to recondition a manual Costs wise, Clutch kit $600-1200, rebuild kit $500-$800, then 1 1/2 days labour

Buy it and drive it for a few thousand ks.
Probably lack of use syndrome.
It will more than likely be the release bearing running on the pressure plate fingers causing the noise. It's under the most load about 3/4 of the way through the pedals movement.
A new clutch in a few thousand ks is a bargening tool, not a deal breaker. It's the bodywork that's the clincher. If that's good, any minor mechanical issues are just bolt off bolt on parts.
The clutch is a high wear part of any vehicle, so in a 1993 it's doing well

Buy it and drive it. You will not be disapointed with the power and torque of that motor. If the clutch needs doing so be it. Then you know that its good and new and ready for the next 100-150k. Sorted

I agree and the difference between auto and manual is huge..

Yeah as tempting as it is, the price tag is a little too high for me. 20k for it! If I'm doing the clutch, that's another 2.5k+. So my estimate is around 23k. The last manual HZJ77 I saw was from queenstown and it was only 16k WITH front & rear difflocks. This one doesn't have it. I'll probably keep waiting and import one myself in the future.

being that we donot know much about the rest of the vehicle apart from the mint body, buit it comes down to judgement's ah ie
how many kilometers? condition of interior? how many owners? overall condition of running gear?
and then what do you want to do with the wagon once you own it, sometimes body condition isnt a major if its going to be used in the bush etc. then reliability becomes first and foremost as a scratched panel will not necessarily stop you from getting home.

most of the $$'s i've spent on my 80 have been maintenance. 3k on tires, lift and 3rd row of seats. With the change to manual (same cost as reconditioning auto) i'be easily spent 10k on maintenance. But i do things properly, so now have reconditioned all but diff heads.
Saying all that we spend 2k a year on maintence on the wifes estima.
The perils of buying 20 year old vehicles that have done 300k

Yup Zukmeista. That's the one. It's just imported last year. I'm guessing since it's possible to start importing them again (20 year exempt) I'll probably pass on this one and import one myself in the future. I can't justify spending 20k on it and another few thousand to fix that weird clutch sound. Thanks for the advice guys!

Could you get them to do the clutch as part of the deal

Nah, he insists that there's no weird sound coming from the clutch. I can hear it quite obviously and my gut feeling would be it won't be a cheap fix. I test drove another 1HZ and I didn't hear that weird sound. So I don't think I'm imagining things.
